- Date: 1963-04-07
- Location: Hiram Bithorn Stadium, San Juan, Puerto Rico
- Referee: Jim Braddock
"Carlos Ortiz of NY successfully defended his world lightweight title Sunday night by scoring a TKO over exiled Cuban Doug Vaillant in the 13th round. Referee Jimmy Braddock, former world heavyweight champion, stopped the fight at 49 seconds of the 13th round after Vaillant had been floored twice in the 12th session. Vaillant had been bleeding from a cut on his left eyebrow suffered in the 2nd round. Ortiz started off by flooring Vaillant in the 1st round, but Vaillant was up on his feet before Braddock began counting. Vaillant's best round was the 3rd when he landed a couple of combination punches, but they failed to deter the champion. In the 11th round, Braddock warned Vaillant for butting and in the 12th Ortiz ripped rights and lefts to Vaillant's head and body and the Cuban was saved by the bell the second time down in that round. Ortiz stormed out of his corner to finish off Vaillant in the 13th using mostly right hands." -United Press International
- This bout was originally scheduled for March 30th but had to be postponed due to a stomach ailment suffered by Ortiz.
