Carlos Ortiz 135 lbs beat Kenny Lane 135 lbs by UD in round 15 of 15

"Carlos Ortiz used a buzz-saw attack of hooks to body and head to score a unanimous decision over Kenny Lane of Muskegon, Mich., in their 15 round bout Friday night and retain the lightweight championship of the world. There were no knockdowns in the 15 round bout viewed by 20,000 spectators in Hiram Bithorn Stadium, but Ortiz twice had Lane in trouble. The hard-working champion cut Lane over the right eye in the 7th round and again in the 11th round but could not catch up to the back-pedaling challenger to land a knockout blow. Lane had a chance to win the fight on a TKO when two jabs cut Ortiz' right eye in the 11th round. But Ortiz bobbed and weaved under Lane's blows from long range and easily stayed out of trouble." -United Press International

  • The bout appeared in jeopardy earlier in the day with Lane having a problem making weight. However, he finally made 135 on his third try at the weigh-in.
  • Unofficial AP scorecard (the UPI piece did not report a card) - 147-140 Ortiz
  • Purses: Ortiz - $62,500, Lane - $12,500 (both guaranteed)
