- Knocked out Jeremy Williams in three rounds to win the vacant WBO Heavyweight Championship on June 29, 1996.
- Relinquished the WBO title after two defenses to fight Lennox Lewis for the WBC title on July 12, 1997. Akinwande was disqualified in the fifth round for excessive holding.
- Was scheduled to fight Evander Holyfield for the WBA/IBF Heavyweight Championship on June 6, 1998 at Madison Square Garden, but the fight was canceled after Akinwande tested positive for hepatitis B.
