Jimmy Edgar was ranked as a top contender for the middleweight championship in 1946 and 1947 the The Ring. However this ended at the end of 1947, as explained in The Ring, March 1948,, page 59, as follows:

"One of Detroit's foremost ringmen of the past seven years, Jimmy Edgar, has been dealt a shocking blow. A physical examination by Dr. N.H. Schlafer found that the local pugilist had a cataract forming on his right eye and (he) was almost totally blind in the left optic because of another cataract. Edgar was to have met Benny McCombs for the State lightheavy crown.

Edgar, born at Starkville, Miss., 26 years old. has had 42 fights in the pro fight game. Among the more notable victories can be found such names as Chuck Hunter, George Kochan, Ossie Harris, and many others. Jimmy also held (Jake) LaMotta to a draw on June 13, 1946, before one of the largest local crowds in years. (His only losses) were to LaMotta twice, twice to Tommy Yarosz, and once to Roy Miller."

Edgar served in the United States Army during World War II.
