- Best known for his ninth-round TKO loss to Sugar Ray Leonard in 1984. Howard became the first boxer to score a knockdown against Leonard as a professional when he floored the former Undisputed World Welterweight Champion with a right hand in the fourth round.

- Ranked 6th at welterweight by The Ring in 1982.
