Originally named the Civic Arena. Became known as Mellon Arena in 1999. It was completed in 1961 at a cost of $22 million. Home of the NHL's Pittsbugh Penguins. For a time, it was the largest retractable dome roof in the world, capable of opening or closing in just two minutes.

On November 06, 1981, it served as host to the Larry Holmes-Renaldo Snipes WBC Heavyweight Title fight.
