Blandon was a dual Australian champion, holding the bantamweight and featherweight titles, and losing neither of them. He relinquished his bantamweight title in September 1934, won the featherweight crown in May 1935 and still held it when he retired in May 1936. He died in 1939 from a brain tumour.

According to an obituary found in the October 18, 1938 (a Tuesday) edition of the Canberra Times on the Trove website, Mervyn "Darkie" Blandon died from a brain abcess in Sydney on Thursday (October 13, 1938). "It is understood that his death was due to injuries received in the boxing ring, and his death at the early age of 26 years is greatly regretted."
