Phil Berger was a sportswriter, author and screenwriter. He died of colon cancer on March 12, 2001, at the age of 58.
Berger was a boxing reporter for the New York Times from 1986 to 1992 and was named "Boxing Writer of the Year" by the World Boxing Association in 1987.
He authored more than a dozen books, including:
- Blood Season: Mike Tyson and the World of Boxing
- Punch Lines: Berger on Boxing
- Smokin' Joe: The Autobiography of the Champ
- Larry Holmes: Against the Odds
Berger also wrote the screenplay for a feature film about boxing titled Price of Glory. The movie starred Jimmy Smits and was released in 2000.
