Sugar Ray Phillips was a 1975 National Golden Gloves Light middleweight champion. In his post-boxing career, Phillips operates his own boxing gym in Dallas, Texas. He also starts as a bailiff in the television court show, "Eye For An Eye," where he's known as "Big Sugar Ray, ex-middleweight champion of the world." As an amateur boxer, Phillips boxed out of Mineral Wells, Texas, and in additional to being a national Golden Gloves champion, he was a six-time Fort Worth Golden Gloves champion and a two-time Star-Telegram Texas State Golden Gloves light middleweight champion and a Southwestern AAU champion. He had an amateur record of 145-6. He was selected to box in the Pan American Games Trials in 1975, but bypass the invitation to box professional.
