Teddy Pagan won the 1960 160lb New York Golden Gloves Open Championship. Pagan defeated John Chavis of the Stamford Boys Club in the finals to win the Champioship. Pagan was defeated in the 1959 160lb Open Championship by Carl Miner of the Police Athletic Leagues 73rd Precinct. Pagan trained at the Police Athletic Leagues Lynch Center in the Bronx, New York. During his three years as an amateur he won 40 of 45 bouts, 20 by kayo. He was featured in The Ring, April 1964 [page 29,48].
