The bout was stopped in the 3rd round by State Boxing Commissioner Frank Coskey who charged that a handler for Mann had struck the time-keeper's bell 50 seconds before the end of the 2nd round to save Mann from a knockout. "Mann was down four times in the second round but recovered and was punching at a good rate in the third when the Commissioner climbed into the ring." (New York Times) Commissioner Frank Coskey, "ruled tonight (May 25) that McCoy had won his bout..Coskey stopped the fight after the third round when the timekeeper told him somebody hit the bell, ending thr second round fifty seconds too soon." (Chicago Tribune, from notes of Bob Soderman) Mann's manager, Marty Krompier, was suspended, and Benny Leonard was permanently banned from refereeing in Connecticut, because of "laxity" for not disqualifying Mann after one of his seconds threw water on him as he took a count.
