The unanimous opinion of ringside experts interviewed, as well as the LA Times and LA Herald, was that McFarland "waited too long" before pressing Welsh, allowing the latter to shade many of the early to middle rounds. But that he dominated the middle to final stanzas and beat Welsh thoroughly enough to earn a draw (the LA Times thought Packey should have gotten the decision). Welsh floored in round 25 by a hard right to the jaw.

"It has been generally supposed that Packie McFarland is an unbeaten wonder. This sentiment was broken recently when Dusty Miller came forward with the proof that McFarland fought him six rounds before the Watita club in Chicago some four years ago and Miller won an easy decision." (Colorado Springs Gazette, 1908-06-21). In 1919 McFarland said ""In my entire ring career I never lost a decision . . . I never met Miller in the ring excepting in an exhibition and there was no decision rendered."
