Griffith took an 8-count in round six, but was well ahead on points going into the 12th round, in which Paret took "an unmerciful beating" (The Ring, page 7, June 1962 issue), leaving Benny unconscious and in a coma when the fight was stopped. Paret was taken immediately to Roosevelt Hospital, never regaining consciousness before his death there on April 3, 1962.

"Moyer was too cautious and defensive in the early rounds and aggressive Paret had things pretty much his own way. In the fifth Denny began to display some initiative and discovered he could hit the Cuban with left jabs and straight rights. From then on the Oregon youngster made things decidedly unpleasant for (Paret)." (The Ring, November 1960, page 57)
