The Ring magazine (March 1937, p. 63) states this is Chase/Louis' first loss after 66 consecutive wins. The Ring was wrong (see Springs Toledo's series, "Chasing Jack Chase" for details). This bout was "Young Joe Louis"'s first loss and third bout in 10 days. Peirce was announced as the middleweight and light heavyweight champion of South Africa and was far more experienced. Louis lost eight of the ten rounds, though Peirce ackowledged that he was "a very good puncher."
