Did any of you watch the ABC at 9.30 tonight?

They showed a doco on the 1985 Barry Michael V Lester Ellis fight. Great fight. Great viewing :TU:

We have a place called Melbourne here in the UK - They call it a town but its only just a little larger than a village - Its situated in Derbyshire and can be reached by a bridge built by the Romans over the river Trent - Melbourne Hall attracts many thousands of visiters every year - By the Hall is Melbourne Pool, a wildlife sanctuary - Really nice place and very popular with visiting Australians because of its name - No idear if there is any connection. Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia and State Capital of Victoria. It is named after Lord Melbourne, who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom when Charles Batman discovered the site of Melbourne in 1835. Lord Melbourne (William Lamb) was married to lady Caroline Lamb who left him for rakehell poet Lord Byron. That is about the most interesting thing related to Melbourne.

In winter it is cold enough to be in England.

I was taught one other interesting thing about Melbourne in primary school, in that it was foundered by Batman well before he appeared in comic books and later films.

There's some funny sheeeeet been posted in this thread :D

Wild waylon - Melbourne here has apopulation of 3.5 million so i's a tad bigger than your Melbourne. I spent a couple of years in England and never even knew there was a Melbourne there :o If I had known then..........I would have ignored it like the plague

Brute - are you aware that there's a Perth in Scotland? The bastards stole the name from us  And the soapless ones from England stole numerous place names from us.....Bayswater, Epping, Preston, Doncaster etc etc (all suburbs of Melbourne no less). The list is endless

And as for Lester Ellis and Barry Michael........they were both born in England. Probably in Croydon (yet another stolen place name) :box:

That reminds me of the number of American TV shows that took name of old Australian TV shows.

There was an Aussie spy series called HUNTER, before the yanks used it for a P.I. show.

There was a show about a news media family, loosely based on the Packer family called DYNASTY, years before that tripe with Joan Collins and John Forsythe.

There was an Aussie cop show called MATLOCK POLICE, before the yanks dragged Andy Griffiths out of retirement to play a lawyer called Matlock.

I wonder when the yanks will come up with a Neighbours? 8)

Most of it was pretty ordinary, (someone would close a door and the whole set would shake) but the stuff from overseas was not much better.

Great post thanks mate - Melbourne hall was indeed the home of Lord Melbourne who took his title name from the town - It is now a Stately home - Lord Gladstones home became park tearooms before being demolished and Lord Walpoles home became a public library - Didnt know your Melbourne got that cold - Last night we had minus temperatures and a hard frost.

That's worse than "Howlong" and "Toolong", two other Aussie towns.

This used to be a routine at weddings at the reading of the telegrams. The best man would yell out "Howlong?" and a groomsman would reply "Toolong"!

Doncater, South Yorks and Perth Scotland have both been known as such since the 12th century - Perth, Western Australia was named by Captain James Stirling in 1829 after Perth Scotland - Cant be bothered to deal with the others - As for Poowong any name with Poo in it is unlikely to be used here, I think.

Poowong is just up the road from me. Nice place, nice pub (doesn't put the fights on though) but they got in trouble earlier this year for having a green footy ground during the middle of water restrictions.
