Post by josh fg »

not that I usualy read the sun but this came up on a google news alert and interested me.

He makes some good points but seems to have ignored the suns roll in stoking up the jingoism in the run up to hatton's fight.

David Haye especially is made for the BBC, lets hope they take note of the 'Sports Personality of the Year' votes and get BIG time boxing back.

Do they have the money to throw at it to get the top class bouts though??? The BBC's last attempt to show boxing was piss poor and done with no knowledge of the sport

Well I think Haye would be cheap at the moment they could get a resonable deal with him to follow him through HW. They have enough money to pay Ross 15 million

Seriously last time they did it they bought Lennox Lewis Hasim Rahman, Audley Harrison fights (bit of a mare) David Haye early Carl Froch (early) Hobson (british title fight) and Clinton Woods (up to his title) not that piss poor but sadly the blue ribbon fighter was crap.

They can surely afford it, and it certainly would not be a prob if they stopped paying big stars like Jonathan Ross tens of millions...

I think the last period of BBC boxing was brilliant, to be honest.

Same here, i loved that for the first time in my adult life i could look forward to watching boxing on terrestrial tv. To be honest, those bbc fights could well be the reason im such a big fan of Froch and Haye today.
And the Audley Harrison debacle was all of their own doing. All they had to to was employ someone with a bit of boxing knowledge and insist they had a say in his opponents. If they did, the end of the 10 fight deal could have ended with a British title and had everyone excited for the next installment.

Would he have been able to beat Williams at the time of the Bonin fight?

I think he'd have stood a good chance. Dont forget that while he lost the first Williams fight, it was only a split decision, and if he wasn't allowed to hand pick his opponents from the start he'd have been a lot better prepared further down the line.

There was nothing wrong with the quality of the BBC fights, but they put them on at past midnight, sometimes a day late, and wondered why they didn't get the figures they wanted.

Point is well taken actualy, I thought he won the Williams fight with the KD and fought with real heart after he got KDed. He would always be difficult to match cos people thought he was the second comming when he won the olympic title and he had to look resonably impressive in his fights or the Tabloids jumped on him as they did against Derek McCafferty who was a good fighter to take on his second fight.

So we got Juliouse Long and polish bouncers insted.

I thought he won vs Williams too, but it wasn't the kind of fight to have me screaming robbery!

Julius Long was, in hindsight, a good result, considering the trouble he gave some good fighters afterwards.

Indeed but fighters like Keith Long and Derek McCafferty and a younger Juliouse Frances and Micheal Sprott at the time would have put him in a better position to chalenge for the Brit title at that point but after the press went after him for going the distance with McCafferty he seemed to go for people who he was sure of winning against.

I mean Domanic Negus.. What the fornicate!

Virtually every prospect does the same, just not to such a wide audience and not with such hype.

...and not for a million quid! The Beeb's lawyers should have been sued for allowing Harrison's contract to permit him to hand-pick his opponents.

The Beeb should have been aware that virtually every prospect starts off with fights such as these, to pay him £1m for his first 10 fights was ridiculous. From Audleys point of view "you can't look a gift horse in the mouth"

The promotion for the fights was also s**t.

I can't see it being any different if they get back into it to be honest though, because Britain simply doesn't have enough top quality fighters that will set the world alight.

Showing the types of fights that we see on Sky on a Friday night is just not gonna cut it on a prime time BBC slot. You can't put Jamie Moore's latest fight or Ian Napa v Martin Power on the BBC, it's just not good enough. Only hardcore fans will be interested in that type of fight.

Looks like allegedly is in talks with the BBC which is to be welcomed. Much as we have criticisms it'll be certain that Warren will make sure the whole thing is much more slickly run and advertised.
