It does differ from fighter to fighter - Steve Robinson was in his early 30's when his chin went.... are you saying he always had a bad chin... Wayne McCullough can still take the lumps now at 37... Jones may never have had the greatest chin. In retrospect I remember one of his fights when he got caught early in a round and as soon as he got back to his corner he complained about getting hit. His reflexes are the problem, his chin may always have been his Achilles heel for all we know but we found that out definitively when the reflexes went.
Prime for prime Jones had the better resume but, again to return to the preference factor of the thread, Toney was the better technical boxer and that has held him up beyond his prime whereas it didn't with Jones who got his ass kicked by Tarver and Johnson and KO'd by shots Toney, even the train wreck I watched against Batchelder, would not get hit with. No one ever kicked Toney's ass, as the man says.
As for the smaller thing, I think I put smaller/poorer/faded, yep I did, you threw up Paz who was smaller, a bigger number were poor and a good few faded. Right now Tito fits into all three so at least, in one sense, Jones is returning to the glory of his prime.
I don't need to search google. Jones had an average chin. If it suddenly goes how can McCall, a heavyweight, still be taking the knocks? It is relative from fighter to fighter but if you refuse to accept that Jones chin problems arrived when he lost his sparkle then we'll have to assume that he had to ditch the chin 'roids and that left him exposed.
If I walked into a gym as a flat-footed and tubby fighter and there was James Toney and Roy Jones there who would I choose to train me on the fundamentals of boxing? Toney. So how do we know his chin was always his achilles heel - again I ask you to review the Ruiz fight or just look at the pics if Roy bores you that much.... When he stood up to the punches of the likes of Ruiz, who hit him clean - maybe, just maybe he is a shot fighter and its affected his punch resistance as it did Robinson and Leonard.
Leonard was 40 and could hardly stand up to a jab vs Camacho. ... Yes, Ray was completely gone - but in my opinion as gone as Jones is now. In 1991 - Leonard's tasted the canvas in all but one fight in since 1988 - obviously his punch resistance was on the wain... that much is obvious. Was he born a chinny fighter - Nope. So why cannot Jones be in the same category? What about the shots Tarver threw and landed on in fight 1?
Jones did the absolute horrendous mistake of moving up and back down from Heavyweight... as he seems to be getting more and more used to fighting at the old weight and his performances have improved - and so has his chin.
I cannot remember the retrospect example, but does that mean he is chinny - did he do a silly dance was he KO'd.
Roy Jones KO'd twice in his career - one he was a bit cold, the other was after a 9 round beating (so what about the other 8 rounds then?) when he was in his mid 30's... Yeah, of course this has to mean he is chinny.
