Gary Lockett
Gary Lockett
Good old Gary Lockett gets another win over a poor opponent, he mentions after the fight about fighting Pavlik! But according to the commentator he turned down fighting Abraham - WTF?!!?!?
I personally think he would have had a better chance of beating Abraham then Elcock. It's so frustrating to think that potentially he could be the IBF #1, rather than convincingly beating someone that ranks 245 / 820 by BOXREC!!!

Another fighter wasting his time, why he was so pleased after beating that guy is anyones guess.ciscokid wrote:Good old Gary Lockett gets another win over a poor opponent, he mentions after the fight about fighting Pavlik! But according to the commentator he turned down fighting Abraham - WTF?!!?!?

Fighters have to learn and you expect them to have easy fights at the beginning of their careers so the odd fight where the result is a forgone conclusion is OK - The problem is so often we get one good fight, the top of the bill, and the rest are decent names fighting muppets - In other words typical SN bills - Of course Lockett was going to win, shouldnt he have fought someone capable of giving him a good go - Usual SN protection, finding fighters with no real hope of winning, or even lasting the distance, to make their fighters look good - I suppose to the casual viewer if they see a KO its a good fight.
Re Gary Lockett
I notice he is getting bad press here. When are you boxing 'know it alls' going to realise that the boxer themselves have no input as to who they are actually going to fight???
They get told literally "go to such n such and fight whoever we tell you to" and thats that!!
Gary didn't fight the best opponent by all accounts but he can only beat who is put infront of him.
and re the Abraham comment who the hell would want to go to Germany knowing that unless you ko the guy you are going to lose on points lets be honest about it.. do people forget Sven Ottke v Robin Reid...?

Re: Re Gary Lockett
I'd have thought he woul dhave jumped at the chance to go to Germany and fight Abraham, with his punch he stands a chance and its not like he's protecting an unblemished record is it? With 2 fights this year he can't be making much money so a chance at a payday with a ranking at stake might have been worth the gamble as opposed to fighting journeymen type fighters that with the exception of a few on his record, he's been fighting all his career.chris_23 wrote:I notice he is getting bad press here. It's true that you can only fight who your promoter tells you too, but you must get an input into who you fight, your career path and where you're going, and if you don't like it, leave and seek a contract elsewhere.
Some of the blame for his lack of career progression must lay at Gary's feet, its not all SN.
Lockett for one reason or another is being badly stifled. Whatever peak he may have had is now close to disappeared after a string of low level assignments. Has Lockett even contested a British title eliminator? I forget, he may have but anyway....Mr. Lockett is another victim of the WBU curse. No wonder fans are frustrated Chris.
Re: Re Gary Lockett
Elcock?? or Bendell against Sylvester, atleast they had the balls to go out there and give it a go.chris_23 wrote: and re the Abraham comment who the hell would want to go to Germany knowing that unless you ko the guy you are going to lose on points lets be honest about it.. do people forget Sven Ottke v Robin Reid...?
Mate - read my post again, I said it's frustrating that he's not steping up and fighting anyone decent - he looks great against low class opponents and does have a chance against Abraham.
What chance would he have agaist Pavlik? Look at Eastman, he went state side twice, lost on points both times to the best out there, so with that thinking why would he want to fight Pavlik?
Lockett would have a chance (maybe a small one
Re Gary Lockett
I can totally concur with the WBU Curse you mentioned. But I'm sorry he is above a British title fight and I think he'd beat easily any of the contenders for that title!!
As far as Lockett not being at his best once again I ask you how can he have the highest ranking of his career and be 'past his sell by date'?
I personally think that going to the Calzaghe gym has and will improve him beyond all recognition. Yeah sure he has had 'bad days at the office' which the majority of fighters do have. I thought he looked superb against Lee Blundell in April don't you..?
I think if you put him in with someone quality it'll bring the best performances out of him. He's a counter puncher so he needs quality leather being thrown at him to look good - which he will!!
He would beat Duddy (who everyone raves about), Eastman who topped a bill in Ireland last week.
I say give him a high profile fight and he'll show his metal - no doubt. There aren't many people who can punch like him in the division, he has ridiculous power...

Re: Re Gary Lockett
Mate - I get the impression that you are Lockett's mate? I'm not slagging off Lockett - quite the opposite, I just wish he'd step up and start fighting some decent opposition.chris_23 wrote:I can totally concur with the WBU Curse you mentioned. You're saying that Lockett is above British class, but he's fighting sh1t fighters. I'm sure he would give Duddy and Eastman a go, I don;t think that he would blow them away, like he did that bloke at the weekend though....
He looked good against Blundell, but to be fair, Bludell looked poor. I hate to say it, but unless Lockett goes up against someone who is decent then he will soon be over the hill and just classed as someone that *was* good, but never really achieved anything...
I'm sure I heard him talk before about going for the European - any news on this??
Re Gary Lockett
I am his mate and a good one at that actually yeah, I am trying to not be too biased here you know. Ps he knows what the WBU means just so people know.
What you have to remember is that Gary has had alot of inactive periods in his career. He had his boxing licence taken off him through ill health early in his career plus 12 months of inactivity under Brian Hughes so in fighting terms his boxing age is approx 27 whereas he is 31 and in my opinion starting to hit his peak. Enzo is training him harder than ever before and I thought he looked good on sat albeit against an inferior opponent. Did you hear Steve Bunce comments? When you spar Joe you can't help but improve can you.
Re fighting top people - I totally agree - he was advised against the Abraham fight for 2 reasons:
1. The germans wanted 4 fight options on him if he won. Meaning if he did win he would have to travel to Germany under AA promotion which is just daft.
2. The money wasn't realistic - it was silly and the guy has got a kid to feed do you know what I mean. At the end of the day this last fight was just a tick over fight before easter.
He will fight top people and hopefully there is a possibility of either fighting pavlik of if not for a vacant WBO title if Pavlik refuses. I don't think he'll fight for the EU belt unless I'm mistaken but don't quote me on that. It just winds me up seeing him slagged off when he is the most honest pro you'll ever meet and has never ducked anyone.
Trust me I only want whats best for him and I firmly believe he'll have a WBO title fight by easter latest (touch wood) then he has to fight allcomers doesn't he... then everyones questions get answered
You should get behind him - he's going to win be it against Pavlik or who ever - he has ko power which people don't realise.
Re Duddy - he'd bomb him out quicker than you think, he couldn't deal with an over the hill eastman and I thought the guy looked very average, didn't you...? Gary would do him inside 5 rounds I think..
I'm enjoying this boxing banter :-)

Do you believe it was a fair decision then? I think that is exactly why germany has such a bad reputation. Danny Williams comments after his fight recently had it nailed IMO.Wales wrote:Wish people would stop making out that reid was robbed against Ottke out in germany. As a side brodie Jorin was on at around 5am this morning on ESPN.

Re: Re Gary Lockett
Great insight Chris thanks, always good to know what goes on behind closed doors. As I said earlier it seems a no brainer to fight AA but when you explained it then it makes sense why he didn't take it.chris_23 wrote:I am his mate and a good one at that actually yeah, I am trying to not be too biased here you know. Chatted with Gary after the Calzaghe vs. Kessler fight, and he was happy to stand and chat, give his opinions etc. Seemed a good guy and I'm sure people aren't knocking him as a person on here but more frustrated at his lack of career progression.
What is his plans for next year? What has SN got in store for him? Will he leave SN if things don't happen etc?
I think re SN its best foot forward towards the WBO title ASAP and I think they are the biggest promoters so it wouldn't make sense to go elsewhere. I think they have a really high opinion of Gary and is trying to make things happen for him - touch wood it will come off very soon..
Re chatting after the Kessler fight - I'm sure he did come across a good guy because he is very honest and down to earth. He is also very very ambitious and knows the WBO title is where he needs to be ASAP.
I would urge people to get behind him and he'll go along way!! its a shame that it hasn't come before now but I think his age isn't an issue because of the years out of the ring, he'll go on to 34-35 easily (hopefully at the top).
I'm sure its nothing personal against Gary and ppl just want to see big fights and I'm sure the fact that his name is being mentioned like this means people knows he's the real deal and feel frustration...

Re: Re Gary Lockett
You make some good points fella, but this is just silly. Lockett isn't close to being in Pavlik's league at this point in time and all of us know that KO power alone isn't enough to win you titles at world level, particularly if you're facing an opponent who's arguably harder-hitting and who has already proven his power by knocking out a world champ (Taylor).chris_23 wrote:You should get behind him - he's going to win be it against Pavlik or who ever - he has ko power which people don't realise.
There's no way on earth I could see Lockett doing to either Taylor or Miranda what Pavlik did to them.
Gary Lockett
That is the wonderful thing about opinions fella, everyone has one. If he connects with Pavlik, he'll go no doubt... but I respect your opinion as I hope you respect mine. Pavlik isn't unbeatable, no one is...
I don't think anyone would underestimate Pavlik but by the same token if you didn't think you could win you wouldn't get in the ring would you..

I am sure we all want the best for Lockett against foreign opponents, but do you really thin Pavliks people are going to look at Lockett after his last contest? I'm sure Pavlik Taylor 2 is happening anyway...
Can you please pass on the fans frustration about him fighting B rate fighters, if Gary thinks he can do Duddy then he should be pushing to fight him - that will give him a lot more exposure in the states and a lot better chance of fighting Pavlik.
Re: Gary Lockett
I hear you, and you're completely right regarding opinions, but there's a long roll-call of British fighters who've tried to step up to world-class and discovered the gulf between that and domestic level is vast... think of Wenton and Lloyd against Barrera, Holligan against Chavez, Foster and Bingham against Winky Wright, I could go on and on and I'm sure everyone reading this can think of more and better examples.chris_23 wrote:That is the wonderful thing about opinions fella, everyone has one. Being a puncher at British level also doesn't mean you carry that power at the top level - look at Randall Bailey who was blowing out everyone on his way to world level, but then at the top found it simply wasn't that easy. Again, there are numerous examples of guys who are thunderous punchers at a certain level, but can't carry their power up.
Again, Ensley had chilling power on the domestic scene but that counted for nothing against Wright.
Lockett's still got it all to prove... but hope he can
You've just hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately I think Pavlik Taylor rematch is happening at Super Middle so if Pavlik decides to stay at Super Middle = bingo because Gary is now No1 contender..
Duddy would be a great fight for Gary because it would raise his profile in the States which is why Pavliks people would probably rather go with Taylor rematch at Super Middle = loads of money and no title on the line against a big name live on pay per view - that is a no brainer isn't it..
I'm having a cuppa with him tomorrow and I'll let him know..
