OK, I get your point but I think even King does not beleive some of the crap he comes out with, he knows its to sell tickets.

Lets concentrate on British promoters and managers.

I think there are a few who actually beleive the shit they come out with.

Hmm...I guess Mr Warren must be up there with his talk of "world" championship fights etc. There are quite a few of course.

For me Maloney is the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of Bullshit.

And the sad thing is I think he actually beleives it.

There is a promoter who works with the BBC who when discussing Rob Norton with me (bearing in mind I have been following Boxing for over 25 years) said, "I think I can get him TV fights because he is a former world champion".

The guy actually beleived that Rob Norton was a genuine World Champion.

Almost everything Maloney says is dubious and hyperbolic in the extreme. At least King and Warren back up some of what they say with action and fighters.

It makes me laugh that Frank Maloney's book is called 'No Baloney'

I forgot that one, it was hilarious.

It was funny when they interviewed Maloney prior to Lewis v Tyson, I seem to recall a lot of talk about how Lewis' 'legs had gone' and how he was going to lose.

They then cut to an insert of Maloney during the fight, when Lewis was beating Tyson like a wayward child, and he was visibly crestfallen.

John Hyland's lines used to make me laugh (with him, not at him). He once phoned up and said, "Steve, Steve, I've just saved British boxing!"
He had just secured a deal with ITV for them to televise Shea Neary. Trouble is, they ended up sticking Shea on at 10 past midnight!

To be fair I thought it was John Hyland who the 'billionaire sportsman' quote was attributable to?

I remember reading it and think - wow, this Magic Ellis must be something special. When I actually saw him fight all I could see was a muscle bound cruiser trying to mix it with the big boys - class.

Hyland said things with typical Scouse humour. As a boxer, he had the misfortune to run into Sung-Kil Moon in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, who was literally a walking car park bollard. Hyland did his best to stay with the Korean but was busted up and stopped in three rounds. Tony Wilson was in the dressing room with the other british boxers and told me that when John came in, it all went quiet because none of the lads knew what to say to him.
John suddenly cracked a smile, and said "Don't worry boys, I came second!"

Hyland is a real character and was a very good amatuer.

It would be nice to see him back in the game. He could give the game a lot

I'm glad you brought it up though Goz, I always have a chuckle when I see that quote.

Brendan Ingle has spouted some tripe in his time, but it's all good entertaining stuff.
