Williams also stated that Hatton will not face hated rival WBC super lightweight champion Junior Witter. I've never heard such a pisss poor excuse in all my born days!!

Its a shame Hattons not willing to put it all on the line agaist Witter in a British mega-showdown, but its because he doesn't like the style match-up and doesn't fancy his chances IMO. Going on about not fighting Junior because he disrespected him is a ridiculous comment for a boxer to come out with. Its a good job Mayweather didn't adopt the same attitude as Hatton.

This decision should affect Hattons legacy and esp how he is viewed over here in the UK IMO.

I'd love to know how Witters career would have turned out if he'd have had Hattons opportunities and backing throughout his career. You can bet your last sixpence that he wouldn't be running scared of Hatton.

Bless him, what a nasty man that Witter fellow is, not giving him credit indeed...

A homecoming fight against Witter is a great option available to Hatton and it's a shame he won't even consider it. Not sure Hatton beats either Witter or Malignaggi, tbh when has he ever looked comfortable against a slick fighter, he avoided Mitchell for christs sake.

And taking on Floyd was a business decision with nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Hatton doesnt seem to be the man that he tries to paint himself as in public...
No, thats just plain wrong...he wouldnt have fought PBF if he knew he was gonna lose, he wouldnt have fought Castillo and he wouldnt have fought KT...

Now Witter is this freaking Monster that Hattons scared shitless of, give me a break..its about public image and Hatton thinks witter is a scrote who shouldnt be saying things about him..is that a good attitude?? Thats the debate...

Hatton is not scared of a man who arguably lost to Kotelnik
Well if Hatton is only avoiding Witter because of the 'insults' then he's dumber than he looks to be blunt, and I dont think he is. Floyd said far worse things about Hatton than Witter has and that didnt stop them fighting. What is it that Witters actually said?... he just called Hatton out, which is the normal thing for rivals to do in boxing. What about Hattons disparaging comments about Mayweather?.... talk about the pot calling the kettle black...

The reason Hatton is scared of Witter and not Mayweather, Kostya and JLC is because there is no disgrace in losing to a legend such as PBF, JLC and KT, Hatton doesn't lose face if he loses, in career terms they are pretty much risk free bouts. Even those fights were taken at the 'right' time, JLC looked past his best in the fight prior to it and against Ricky. KT was still an excellent fighter with a BIG dig, but he'd fought 3 competitive rounds in the previous 2 years and Ricky outlasted him.

If Hatton loses to Witter who hasn't got the profile of a PBF or a JLC then Hatton loses alot of face especially as Witter is from down the road and has been calling him out for years. Fighting Witter is a risk hes a tough challenge its not one that Ricky is prepared to take accept as hes scared of losing face.

You can have sympathy with Witter but the fact is that he brings no fans (well no one willing to log-off and go to his fights), no buzz and nothing that interests HBO/the States.

Saying "HBO made Collazo, made Urango" only hammers home where Witter stands in their eyes.

It is a longer boiling Haye-Macca situation in which two men have taken different trajectories, one moved up with a purpose, the other seems to think the other guy owes him a living. It is true that Witter has annexed the WBC title but he has taken it and made it into nothing. He won it in a leisure centre and defends it there still. Harris was a genuinely good name but no one turned-out for the fight. With the noise his online fans make you wonder why the venue seemed so flat.

The Hatton/Witter fight was never made but Tszyu/Mayweather, and possibly more big ones, were/will be made. One guy is mixing with the sports elite because he had an exciting early career, lots of fans and can bring a lot to the table. Witter only brings his WBC title and that means nothing while he holds it.

It is a harsh reality but the fight is unlikely to be made unless Hatton loses again and at a lower level than he lost to in Floyd. Witter seems proud of the fact that he stuck to his guns and style but ultimately he then cannot expect the sport to owe him a pension, which the Hatton fight would provide.

I understand the views of the Witter fans but it is a moot point. Why not go out and get some air? Perhaps by attending one of his fights!

I do genuinely hope Witter gets a "money" fight soon. A bout with Castillo would be a start but I cannot recall if Witter rubbished him as "shot" post/pre-Hatton? In which case he might find it hard to promote that one beyond the Doncaster Dome.

As for the personal thing, which shouldn't be a factor, the fight should have been made years ago. If I was Hatton, given the post-Thaxton and post-Tszyu remarks in particular, I'd let Witter wither on the vine and retire without ever giving him the big money. Hatton's longer standing will be viewed via Tszyu, Mayweather and the next fights.
But boxing fans remember all the talk a few years ago when both were with Sports Network. Hatton telling us that he had it written into his contract to fight Junior Witter, and that it would be on at Maine Road etc.

Now we have RH wanting to move back down to 140, wanting a fight in the UK and Witter has a world belt round his waist.

If Hatton comes out and says ‘It’s purely money – I can make more by fighting X in the States/on HBO’ fair enough, but last week he said ‘It’s not about money – I’m only in it for the glory’.

So which one is it, Ricky?

If Hatton wanted the Junior fight he'd make it happen, irrespective of what HBO want. Junior not selling tickets is another poor excuse for the fight not happening, how many did Phillips, Oliveira, Tackie etc. sell?

Witter-Hatton is never going to happen I've 'pretty much' accepted the fact, but how people can defend Hattons decision to avoid Witter is totally beyond me

(this imaginary fight is gonna get me the sack if I don't get some work done. I started my Christmas wind down in mid-November and I'm virtually static now)

Plenty of guys who lived in Angelina Jolie's home town years back may think, "I lived near her, we have similar interests, all my mates want to bone her, hey, I should be banging her right now but she's with Brad Pitt at the Oscars! How did that happen?!"

I think that all the time about Angelina Jolie too, and I didn't even live near her! :TU:

Hatton has used this argument for some time....and when Witter was bowling over mismatched opponents, he had a point.

But Witter has stepped it up a few notches since then and with Hatton moving up has proved himself as one of the top two (along with Mallignaggi) light welterweights in the world.

Whereas before Witter could be accused of trying to trash-talk himself a title shot, with his wins over Ndou, Kotelink and Harris he has earned a chance.....not to mention that this is THE fight that the british fight fans want.....and we should be denied this because of some talking that was done years ago!?!

I'd be gobsmacked if he does, if he wanted the fight he'd have took it by now. Also Hatton looks to be ageing quicker than Junior is, so he can't wait til Juniors over the hill.

Hattons been made a multi-millionaire through boxing and he owes alot of that to his fans, hes been able to pick and choose his opponents and progress his career at his pace mainly because of the backing he has from his fanbase and the money that they generate. If Hatton didn't have his backing from the fans, he could have ended up at the other end of the spectrum struggling for opportunities and fights like JW has throughjout his career. Obviously Rickys style attracts the fans, but to say Ricky owes the fans nothing is wrong IMO.

Hatton is thinking of fighting in the UK, but Witter is ruled out?

That is fvcking crazy, because Witter is a dangerous holder of a world title & it's a genuine grudge match.

Could it happen at some point though? Ray Hatton seems to think so:

I never thought I'd end up writing this but I think that Hatton is bottling fighting Witter. Pure and simple. I don't think he could handle being beaten by another Brit and it would seem that he thinks Witter is capable of turning him over.

I love Hatton to bits, he has given us some brilliant nights over the years; but were he to dodge Witter his legacy would be seriously tarnished, in my opinion.

The old "nobody knows who Junior Witter is" argument is bollocks. Nobody in the UK knew who Mayweather Jr was until a few weeks back. Marketing a fighter is easy when you have the TV channels on your side.

Ray Hatton ruled out Junior Witter being his son's next opponent but said that fight was likely at "some stage".

"I can see a Junior Witter fight at some stage, but not right now."
Why didn't Ricky say the above when he was interviewed on Setanta though?

It sounds promising :D :D first time I've heard something so positive come out of Team Hatton regarding a Junior Witter fight, hopefully they're not just trying to appease the angry mob!

Surely Witter has to be next in line after Hattons next bout! :TU:

ask someone to show those them the Witter-Harris fight & it shouldn't be too hard to make.

I know Showtime hate Witter, because he spoiled the Tyson-Francis undercard with the awful fight with Judah. But if HBO can approve Collazo and Urango, they can green light Witter. HBO even let stars like Cotto have gimme fights like Urkal, so I don't see what the big objection would be.

A British set fight should be vs Witter.

That actually doesn't make sense. I just don't see the fight happening as long as Hatton is with HBO (MAX: They accepted the Urango fight because he had interesting fights on USA TV, and is not Junior Witter, who has a name with negative connotations).
This argument no longer holds water Terry, with respect.

Hatton alone can sell the fight, and HBO will have no problem selling it, I've defended Hatton to the hilt over the years, and lambasted team Witter for riding Hatton's coat tails, but now there are no excuses, get in there and fight the man.

Well, we will have to agree to disagree. I don't think Hatton's stock has suffered at all. Hatton did the unthinkable, and forced Mayweather into an exciting performance, and even a KO. A tune up fight against someone Hatton looks good against, and then Witter, no problemo.

There comes a point Terry, when there is the issue of pride and silencing your rivals. There was a lot of bad blood between the likes of Minter, Sibson and Kaylor, but you know what, the fights got made, rather than people saying 'I don't like him and I'm not giving him a payday.'

I think Hatton v Witter only really has domestic appeal, so as long as Hatton is intent on remaining Stateside I can’t see it being made.

Witter needs Hatton to boost his profile, whereas Hatton doesn’t really need him. I can see Hatton having perhaps 2 more fights, and then the two of them finally meeting up for a big domestic showdown in the UK (a la Eubank vs Benn 2). What Witter will do in the meantime I don’t know.

maybe but Hatton says he wants to "reward the fans" with a fight in the UK.

If he fights in the UK but refuses Witter then I take exception to that.

You could say the Witter noise of "I deserve this fight" has become background noise and an ignored one. Actually I'm being a prick.

On a few Us sites and the torrent one they seem to think the fight was poor with a lot of mauling and they see Hatton as a Ruiz type. So he needs a good foe and fight next time. Torres or someone like that.

I just don't think many people outside tour scene see it as a pressing bout. Junior as a title holder has the same problems he did as a contender. Few want to watch him fight and fewer still feel compelled to give him fights that he has not earned.

In another alternative world, in which I'm not talking about anyone or any belt in particular, an organisation, the CWB, could be slightly miffed about their current title holder in a given division and start to provide stiff mandatories to knock him off and get their prestigious title into different hands.
you'd think Torres would have negative connotations though, given that many feel he's been lucky to retain his title this year
