Bidding open for the 2008 Youth World Boxing Championships

07.12.2007
AIBA is proud to announce that the bidding process for the first edition of the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships is now open.

The biennial AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships, which replaces the former Under-19 World Championships which was last held in Morocco in 2006, will be held in October, 2008.

Is USAB having a Under-19 national in 2008?

What is up with only having the lower 8 weight classes? I can't believe they won't have the 81, 91 and 91+ kg weight classes for the Under 19 classification of boxers.

This is just plain ridiculous :o . It seems AIBA never stops surprising with stupid actions. The heavyweights are the face of the sport (look at Savon, Stevenson, Foreman, Frazier, etc). They already wanted to get rid of the super heavyweights in 2002 and now this. The problem is the leaders don't know much about boxing it seems :( .
The only explanation I can find is they have to cut the number of entries for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games scheduled for 2010 but I don't see the point in cutting those weights at the U19 Worlds.
We need more and better boxer at the heavier divisions and this certainly won't help.
Also I don't understand the point in changing the names of the age categories. The juniors (17-18 ) are now youth and cadets (15-16) are now juniors :-? ! Anyone can tell me why?

Only AIBA can translate what they are doing. They probably aren't including the heavier weight classes because they are sparse in a lot of the AIBA countries.

Youth Olympic Games are replacing the U-19 Worlds.

Who knows if USAB will have an Under-19 - OR any other events in 2008.

Here in the US, there are very few 106 & 112 pound boxers, except in a few parts of the country. Look at the numbers in each weight category at the US Championships, NGG & NPal.

But the Youth Championships include 14 through 18. Not a whole lot of 14 year olds in the heavier weights and if there are, they probably don't have much experience.

But the Youth Olympics will be held every four years. Today the World Juniors are held every two years so I'd believe there should be held a World Youth Championships every four years in between (when there are no Youth Olympics).

But todays cadets already have a maximum weight of 86 kg. There is no need to cut it further.

Ooops, I was wrong about the 14 year olds (but I did see it somewhere - maybe AIBA is confused?). Here's the "word," straight from their web site:
The biennial AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships, which replaces the former Under-19 World Championships which was last held in Morocco in 2006, will be held in October, 2008.
Description of AIBA Youth World Championships:

As one of core sports programme in the Youth Olympic
Games, IOC and AIBA have agreed the following competition
format for the sport of boxing. Based on this agreement, AIBA
decided to organize the AIBA Youth World Championships in
coincide with the Olympic Movement for young generation.

A. Disciplines and Events:
8 Weight categories for men – 48kg, 51kg, 54kg,
57kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg

B. Age Group:
17 – 18 years old based on the “Year of Birth”

C. Format of Competition:
A total of 4 round, each round for 2 minutes
I would suggest emailing AIBA through their web site with any questions. They seem fairly responsive.

As there will be held a separate Youth World Championships (which replaces today's Under 19 Worlds) I don't see the need to cut down the weight classes. It's plain stupid.
I understand that if they can't have 11 weight classes at the Youth Olympics then it's understandably to cut off some weights there (I'd like it another way but that's not the point here).
My point is: keep today's weights in all comeptitions except for the Youth Olympics. Sounds logical to me.

Arghhhhh - my apologies, localbox. I was confused between World Youth and Youth Olympics. Again - you can contact AIBA and see why they aren't including all weight classes.

The 86kg in the cadets is too low as well, but there hasn't been that limitation on the World Junior Championships (U-19). It shouldn't start now.
