To be a world champ , and then still to be ranked at no 20, that takes some beating.

Its not often anyone gets a world title crack having fought mostly 6-8 rounders. Lets be honest most if not all of the top 10 would beat him. Number 10 probably will next anyway.

No. 20 sounds very generous for Gavin Rees.

Rees might be the worst belt holder ever, and considering this is the WBA we're talking about that is one hell of an achievement.

Luis Santana was the worst.

Gavin Rees may have the thinest resume since Steve McClaren but unlike his gammy toothed, bib dispensing contemporary he does have talent.

How would you see the following encounters unfolding?

Rees v Arthur at 135
Rees v Harrison at 135
Rees v Khan at 135
Rees v Lynes at 140
Rees v Witter at 140
Rees v Torres at 140
Rees v Romanov at 135
Rees v Kotelink at 140

Rees is no mug, and increasingly, within the bounds of reality I find it hard to bet against an Enzo Calzaghe fighter.

He's got a longer unbeaten run than Forest in 1978/79.

I'd find it hard to pick Rees over any of them, but then again a win over MBaye looked impossible too. We'll have to wait and see if he's a one-hit wonder or not.

I'd pick him over Arthur for one.

Mbaye just stood there paralysed all night. It was one of the most bizarre title defences in history.

Why is he defending against Kotelnik in Germany? SN don't have many world champs, so I would have thought he'd be making an easy defense in Wales and keeping the belt warm for Amir.

Because Kotelnik is his mandatory - he has to fight him. And Universum won the purse bids, so obviously they want the fight to be in Germany.

How much is Gavin being paid for this one then?? Also i think he will beat Kotelnik if he fights the same as he did when he won the title.

Clearly done well for himself - but certainly not world class!!!

I would seriously wonder how anyone could justify calling him that.

Lets be honest, the only guy on there he would start favourite against would be Harrison, and then only because nobody would know whether Scott had anything left in the tank. Of the rest, he might give Romanov a run but the others I'd take to the bookies.

Undoubtedly the worst world champion out there that I can recall right now. Fair play to Rees, he beat the man he was put in to challenge, but it has become a terrible division. Hatton, Witter and Malignaggi - I can't believe these guys stood buy and let a free belt go up for grabs elsewhere. I'm surprised Golden Boy didn't try to get Rees for Demetrius Hopkins, maybe even on the undercard of Calzaghe-Hopkins.

More than that, I'm surprised that Warren has let things slip so badly that Rees heads straight into a mandatory against Kotelnik that he will, at the very best, be a 3/1 shot in - they've had nigh on six months to plan something better to either m ake Gavin a bit of cash, a bit of publicity (I don't think any of us doubt that he will go back to lightweight with some potential if nowt else) or even a win.

He's very underrated. Judging on Arthur's last performance I'd fancy Gavin, and against Kotelnik.

M'Baye was poor but at least Rees took full adantage of that...

I'd facny Khan to beat him, but he'd give anyone a fight.

Kotelnik is a slow starter, if Rees can get 4 rounds up early and his chin holds out then he stands a good chance of the win.

I don't like the term 'worlds worst title holder' , Gavin trained hard for his shot at the title, and won it fair and square. give him some credit.

Rees is not a bad little fighter but nobody can say he should be fighting at light welter, he's really just a super feather. M'Baye was terrible the night Rees beat him but fair play to him for doing what he had to do. World class is a different prospect altogether though

Just think once he fights a light welter with ambition and some decent power he may start to look well out of his depth. Once Kotelnik beats him (which I think he does fairly comfortably) he stands to make some good money at super feather or lightweight as a former world champ against Frank's large group of fights at or around those weights.
