Gamboa v Norwood

They don't hang about with these Cubans . Yuriorkis Gamboa 7-0 6kos is taking on former champ Freddie Norwood .
So is it a case of the handlers of Gamboa are very confident or they are trying to get him to the top quickly to cash in before he goes wrong.

Norwood held the WBA featherweight title in the late 90's and beat Antonio Cermeno, Juan Manuel Marquez and Julio Pablo Chacon in that run. Norwood has only just come back after a lay off of 6 years and lost his last fight by DQ, but he's a big step up in class for Gamboa.

Gamboa has looked good so far , as a former Olympic gold medal winner should. But Norwood if he has anything left in the tank will put pressure on him. He's always shown a good chin, so i don't think he'll fold easily. Pick is Gamboa on points. But we'll know alot more about him after this one.

Might be better matchmaking on paper than it seems. Norwood was apparently awful in his last fight and i think Gamboa will beat him but like you say it's good stepping stone fights from Arena Promotions.

Not sure I've ever watched a Norwood fight.

Like Espinosa (?)he's defined by the fact he wasn't fortunare enough to get paid to be paid out by Naseem.

He was always on the list but never got plucked from relative obscurity - despite his belt - to hit the big time.

Only in my opinion of course, or from inside my maroon coloured world.

It's about getting a name that can't do anything anymore to get the fighters talked about.

Ohner tried to make Solis v Francois Botha. Botha had a massive layoff as well though the bout never happened.

Gamboa is genius.

This guy will almost certainly be a serious champion.

Yes its is, Norwood has some good names on his record, but he was never pretty to watch. he beat various world champions. Vuyani Bungu, Mauricio Martinez, Agapito Sanchez, Antonio Cermeno, Luis Enrique Mendoza, Juan Manuel Marquez and Takashi Koshimoto

Which is an impressive list.

On paper a good step up for Gamboa then.

Don't rate Solis as a pro but definately like Gamboa.

Norwood is for sure on the slide but to take on someone of his massive experience in only your 8th pro fight is impressive. I've never had a chance to see Gamboa but he's had rave reviews so far. I'll have a look see if there's anything on youtube....

Great tip Ian - I hadnt seen any of Gamboa's pro career, remember him at the Olympics though.

Following your post I have checked out a few of his outings on youtube and, as people say, he is an awesome prospect with great confidence and other-worldly speed.

His blurring hands are almost Meldrick Taylor-esque and he should blitz as ageing Norwood who hasnt had a serious fight in 7 years.

Look forward to seeing plenty more of this live wire

Solis has some nice timing, good power, fast hands. He also appears to be developing a more economical style. Hopefully the fitness improves.

Think Solis is a naturally stocky man so I doubt he could ever make cruiser.

Gamboa v Norwood has been cancelled, Norwood was a late withdrawl.
Gamboa to face late sub Gilberto Luque , who's a featherweight.

He'd have to lose over 3 stone. But 3 years ago he was within 201 lbs.
