There is a contributor here that has stated that everyone was afraid of Sonny during those tournament days...however a former sparring partner, a fella who knew his weaknesses showed no fear, (even with a compromised eye already in progress) and signed on the line with confidence and a smile on his face. (Granted a year and a half after the tourney.)
Leotis ko'd Thad Spencer, who I have a film of somewhere, crossing a right hand over and dropping Terrell in the WBA Tournament (but couldnt' put him away...Thad lacked that big KO punch don't ya know!) and also beating a rough and tough Doug Jones. I think I have the Martin VS Ellis fight too, Where Jimmy's hustle busted up Leotis' lip and was the writing on the wall....as Ellis got annoyed and put Leotis away. (Sonny could not manage the same feat! Imagine that!)
Hard to imagine Liston being put to sleep by his former sparring partner Leotis. This certainly tells us at least a little bit about Sonny, a guy who couldn't always turn in a good performance when the chips were really down. He had his good days for sure especially with the china chinned Floyd, but those bad days ....well they were bad days.
Leotis performed a "Foremanectomy" on Liston...vaguely mirroring How Foreman defeated Moorer....literally losing the fight until his man was lulled into a sort of trance of confidence and then one of the most violent KO's in HW history explodes not from the scary Sonny (who had his man down earlier), but from his humble sparring partner Leotis Martin. Not exactly the heaviest hitter out there but enought to put Sonny deeply into DREAMLAND.
However he did pay for his insolence with a detached retina....one that was already in big trouble based on an earlier fight. I'm sure the bout with Sonny did not help it in the least. But this fight would be Leotis last fight and Sonny's second to last.
Bad Days....even Liston had 'em. Two other guys gave him bad days....fella named Clay and this other fella named Ali.

Re: Leotis Martin/Helping to Define Liston
I don't think this fight says too much about Sonny. He might have been as old as 45 for this fight . . .way past his best. He was far ahead and had Martin down in the 4th, but just couldn't put him away. Martin broke Liston's nose before landing a jackhammer right hand late in the fight. Martin was a very good fighter.BoxBuzz wrote:There is a contributor here that has stated that everyone was afraid of Sonny during those tournament days...however a former sparring partner, a fella who knew his weaknesses showed no fear, (even with a compromised eye already in progress) and signed on the line with confidence and a smile on his face. That's the problem when "debating" with crankberry.BoxBuzz wrote:well in that case you can point out a single "error in fact" that I may have committed. I'm the clueless one...so it won't be hard to find my errors and straighten out the public on how I'm "conning" them. Hey I learned from you how to use facts, only in this case I'm refraining from opinion...other than my remark about Thad Spencer's KO punch.
And now...the student has become the master....
Funny how facts work....I like Liston and mean him no disrespect...but these are the facts.
No one really wants to get down to his level of posting by trying to heap shite on former greats.
I have no urge to belittle the giants of the sport that Ali fought. Why should I, I'm not some bitter and twisted old jackass with a closed mind trying to rewrite history.
Purely offered to bring transparency to a process that is nonsensical in every way. I hope the parody is not lost on too many of you. It uses cross reference styling and facts to create malleable "factoids". It was granberry who said that Liston was too much of a risk during this time period....However as granberry has correctly stated no good prospect wanted any part of him at that time. OR you could say that he fought a bunch of bums for this period of time. It's all about what your agenda may or may not be.
Anyone here NOT familiar with the scam?
I thought it rather nicely done.
However now that I hopefully have made a point I will retire from these dialouges and neatly lock this thread lest someone take it seriously which would certainly be out of context and of no real purpose.
