Matt Skelton
English Boxers that the English dont like
Must admit to being surprised at seeing Kevin Mitchell's name on here. A mate of mine trained at the same gym as him and said he was a good lad.
Audley for me. Surely he must have known his own limitations before spouting off so much shit?
Got to admit liking Matt Skelton for the fact that he always gives 100% and seems a genuinely nice chap outside the ring.
Was never a big fan of Tony Oakey either.

My cousin is two or three years older than Mitchel, but went to the same school as him, but said he is a nice enough kid.CB wrote:Must admit to being surprised at seeing Kevin Mitchell's name on here. A mate of mine trained at the same gym as him and said he was a good lad.

At this time of year shouldnt we be posting about boxers we like?
How about Charlie Magri for starters, a really terrific bloke and one of the very best amatuers this country has ever produced.
Not to mention a top class pro who won the british title within about 6 weeks of turning pro
I take it your joking when you say Skelton always gives 100%, in his fight with Sprott they should have both been kicked out..CB wrote:Must admit to being surprised at seeing Kevin Mitchell's name on here. A mate of mine trained at the same gym as him and said he was a good lad.

in my view its because he was, and possibly still is, a bit of a scally and is thought to be a dirty fighter. i dont really care about his scally status but i would like to see him polish it up just a little inside the ropes. having said that i think he's a great prospect and its not ballroom dancing is it?
have a good year derry

How many racist comments does one have to utter, to be officially racist in your opinion?King Tubby wrote:Why is Minter always called a racist? Is it because he said ' No black man is taking my title'? Have there been other comments from him?
IMO, he is (or was in September 1980) racist.
He brought a racial element to a contest that had NO racial undertones.
It's not as if it was Jack Johnson -v- Jim Jeffries in 1910 America; it was in multicultural London in 1980!

No problem.King Tubby wrote:Sorry Bo, worded the question wrong,(or you interpreted it wrong) What I meant was, has he regularly made racist comments? I'm not a racist if that's what you're implying.
I apologise; I thought you were defending Minter's comments.
To my knowleddge, he has never said anything thing else of that nature, but his comments made the whole fight's mood ugly, culminating in the ugly scenes after his defeat.
There was just no need for the comments.

Ricky Hatton has a growing number of haters..the hate wagon on ESB was BIG..it started with his repetative sh!te about him being a down to Earth Council lad who drinks guiness, then when he put up a pathetic display against PBF and fooled his bumboys into spending all their Christmas money on going to see him get KTFO.
Then Hatton destroyed the last bit of respect he had by going and making excuses for losing and then ducking Jnr Witter whilst crying like a baby on live T.V.
I bet the fat c^nt weighs around 14stone by now.

Hmmmm I wonder wether all you do-gooders will make the same judgment about Hopkins' comments (and over and over again) about Joe Cal 27 years later....my bet is no one changes their stance.
Lovely double standards.
I used to like Hamed in the early days as he was fresh, and exciting but just pushed it too far. Hated him near the end and then when he ruined that poor man's life followed by his classless behaviour afterwards....
Don't hate Khan but hate the hype. HE has started to act a bit of a tool though.

I think Hopkins is a racist idiot too & I hope Calzaghe smashes him back to the dark ages, where his type belong!
I bet you weren't expecting that, were you???

My main point in that Hamed is a pudendum regardless!
sorry bo - hate to disillusion you but if london was the cosy multicultural place you think it was in 1980 minters remarks would have been ignored or ridiculed. the fact that his words stirred up the hornets nest shows that far from being this panacea of cultural harmony, london had a nasty undercurrent of confusion about race that it has yet to purge even today.
the racialist undertones still exist in boxing as we speak, though great progress has been made. but at the time of the minter/hagler fight the social situation was only too easily understood.

Yes there were. Toxteth was the biggest I think, then there were those in London in Brixton and Notting Hill Gate.Terry D wrote:Weren't there race related riots in London in the 1980's?harrygreb wrote:sorry bo - hate to disillusion you but if london was the cosy multicultural place you think it was in 1980 minters remarks would have been ignored or ridiculed. the fact that his words stirred up the hornets nest shows that far from being this panacea of cultural harmony, london had a nasty undercurrent of confusion about race that it has yet to purge even today.

The East End of London today still harbours a rather less than progressive attitude towards race relations. What I find amusing about that, is that an awful lot of East Enders themselves are descendends of Jewish, Italian and Eastern European migrants who came over at the turn of the century.

There were race related riots all over England in the early 1980's; London, Manchester, Liverpool & Bristol.Terry D wrote:Weren't there race related riots in London in the 1980's?harrygreb wrote:sorry bo - hate to disillusion you but if london was the cosy multicultural place you think it was in 1980 minters remarks would have been ignored or ridiculed. the fact that his words stirred up the hornets nest shows that far from being this panacea of cultural harmony, london had a nasty undercurrent of confusion about race that it has yet to purge even today.

That's right.Terry D wrote:I recall seeing the riots on a few docs. Plus the pilot episode of 'London Burning' of course.
Wasn't that policeman killed in the Tottenham area during a riot?
That was later on in the 1980's, but it was a big riot on the Broadwater Farm Estate, where an officer was killed & they do not know to this day who killed him.

Johnny Speight creator of Alf Garnet wrote a play called "If there werent any blacks you would have to invent them" - The message was simple, human beings have to have an enemy - There were also Asian riots in Southall in the late 80s as well as the Brixton, Peckham and Notting Hill riots that took place earlier.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Yes there were.
