What is it about Scotland and drugs!

Post by bennie »

A former British champion who turned to drug dealing has been ordered to pay £10,622 following a probe of his assets.
Michael Deveney was jailed for 15 months in 2002 after being caught with a haul of ecstacy tablets. Deveney, 37, represented Britain at bantamweight in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and later won the British featherweight title with a decision over fellow Scot Wilson Docherty in January 1995. He was beaten two months later in a non-title fight by Dynamite Dean Phillips, and lost the title in his first defence to Jonjo Irwin.
He ended up peddling ecstacy at a bar where he worked.
Police had kept Deveney under surveillance after it was suspected he was selling drugs to revellers while working as a doorman at Paisley's Bier Kellar.
Deveney, of Paisley, had 54 ecstacy tablets worth up to £540 when arrested in July 2001.
The Crown sought to confiscate property from Deveney under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
The issue was resolved yesterday when Deveney was given 12 weeks to pay £10,622 as the confiscation order sum.

Its a sad reflection on the fact that very few fighters can secure themselves financially through boxing alone and quite often end up having to find other ways to make ends meet once there careers are over.

On a seperate point, why do papers/police alway over value these 'drug hauls'? £10 for an e?!? Yeah right.
