A New Orleans Governor granted his last batch of pardons yesterday (Friday), bestowing 14 commutations of sentences and 69 pardons to clear criminal records.
Governor Foster, who leaves office on Monday when Kathleen Blanco is sworn in, also denied 242 appeals for pardon. One of those denied was Clifford Etienne, the "Black Rhino," who had asked for a pardon to clear a conviction for armed robbery committed when he was 17.
Foster said the details of the crime were just too brutal to grant a pardon.
Etienne served 10 years of a 40-year sentence and was paroled in 1998. Etienne had embarked on a robbery spree with three other men, during which he shot one victim in the arm, then took two others to a remote soyabean field, forced them to strip and robbed them of about $1,000 and a gold watch.
While serving his sentence at two Louisiana prisons, Etienne turned to boxing and won the state prison championship.
I don't like Etienne, and I like him even less now. When he was booed on his way out of the ring against Tyson last year, he made "I'm in the money" gestures to the crowd.
That was desperately immature.

He's a typical wanker. That fight shouldn't have been sanctioned. And after Etienne should have definitely got some of his purse clipped.

If there was ever a fight I saw where I highly suspected a fighter went into the tank..It was Tyson-Etienne..

Jermain Taylor's win over Rios looked far more suspect to me. The punch which Taylor landed barely touched the top of his head, and barely ruffled his hair let alone did enough

I don't think the Tyson fight was a fix as such. The punch he landed was certainly a big one, and Ettienne went down convulsing like a man who has been shot. What was suspect was that Ettienne had his eyes pressed tight shut, he looked like he decided not to bother making any effort to get up.

Even if he had, Tyson would have soon smashed him back down again.

I know Tyson is certainly capable of knocking him out legitimately..But the context of this fight They are trying to build up Tyson for one more shot at Lewis.He needed a quickie knockout ..He's pretty much washed up..If Tyson had Labored six or seven rounds and beaten etienne in unipressive fashion...It certainly would have hurt business for a Lewis rematch....

He looked likre he didn't even try to get up..

It looked pretty fishy

"Fixed" in the time honoured tradition of making a fight where they knew one of the fighters was scared for his life going into the ring.
Ettiene was shaking in his boots when he met Tyson, very similar to the Seldon farce - just didn't have the balls to put up a real fight and was never going to get up, no matter what he'd been hit with. I've never seen it, but did hear Ettiene got caught with a pretty good shot in there..

Strange thing about Ettiene is he comes from a very respectable family. Both parents are hard workers with good jobs. He never needed the money, so god knows why he decided to go out bank robbing...

Etienne was hit hard, and the way his leg went, there is little doubt the knockdown was legit.

However, his complete lack of any attempt to get up, just make it rather suspect.

Good post. He was hit, and he only just managed to pull his leg out from under him when landing. But his head cleared immediately and that's when he definitely thought the better of getting up. He actually pulled his gumshield out and held it in his glove, the most obvious "I quit" move in the history of heavyweight boxing.
Then to needle the crowd was diabolical.

as if a hitter like mikey needs help to whack out clifford ettienne. a man whos jaw had barely held up to clay-bey and botha (non-hitters) and been bounced off the floor by oquendo (even less a hitter)

ettienne went head up at tyson, got cracked square in his glass chin, went down hard.

most predictable fight of 2003.
