Deacon Jones Was No Fighter

Post by dagosd2000 »

David "Deacon" Jones was one of the most feared defensive linemen in the National Football League. He played with the "Fearsome Foursome" when he was with the Rams. Sometimes they would put two or three guys on him. He was even big by today's standards:6ft. 5 in. 270 lbs.

When Muhammad Ali was training for his fisrt fight with Ken Norton in San Diego, there was always a big turnout to watch him work. One afternoon Ali's not doing much. He grabs a microphone and says he's got a cold. He starts reciting poetry, flirting with the women, talking about his family, and says Ken "Fartin'" better watch his ass. All of a sudden someone yells from the back of the room in a big voice"You aint so tough"

Ali storms over to the side of the ring gazing out to see who said that. He spots Jones. He's standing there with his chest all heaved out with his arms crossed in front of him. Jones has a big shit eating grin on his face. Ali yells"Who's that?" Someone replies,"Why that's Deacon Jones"

"Deacon Jones" shouts Ali"Is that some kind of wrestler?" People begin to laugh. .Ali stomps over to Bundini Brown and grabs some boxing gloves. Ali rushes back across the ring and looks for Jones again. Jones starts shifting his weight and isn't smiling like he was a moment ago. Ali flings the gloves across the room at him and yells"Put em on sucker right now cause I'm gonna kick your ass" The gloves land at Jones's feet. He doesn't make a move. Everyone is now looking at Jones. Jones has this little smile on his face and nervously waves his hand like he didn't mean it. Someone must have been praying for the "Deacon" or he would have got his ass kicked

Rugby League & Rugby Union in Australia (& Grid Iron in the States) are tough ball games. They are not contact sports, like some describe them. They are collision sports, & you have to be tough to play them.

However, they are by no means boxing. It's not to say guys like Mark Geyer & this Deacon Jones fella weren't tough guys --- but how many of football's tough guys could measure up to the likes of Joe Frazier or Julio Cesar Chavez, or just about any fighter for that matter?

There are tough guys (football) & then there are supermen (boxers).

Totally agree... Every now and then a ruck breaks out in football, NFL, rugby, etc... that's when you get to see them throwing punches and you realise that a decent welterweight would take out 99% of them.

Great story by the way dagosd2000...

Was that a confirmed story about Fenech? I've always heard it floating around. I take it it was verified?

On weekends, I work the door myself. I wouldn't want Fenech in my club...:-?

Actually, from what I recall of the story, it was TWO big ass, steroid monkey, bodybuilder types who were giving Fenech sh-t about something on the casino floor in Atlantic City ( I think Jeff was there during a Tyson or Jeff Harding card ).

Well, apparently Fenech came across the same two numbnuts by the elevators where they continued running their mouths & behaving aggressively toward him, so Jeff belted them both out in short order. :D

Whenever I think of big tough guys taking on someone who can fight I think of Greg Haugen winning all of those tough man contests in Alaska.
