Thaxton challenge to Khan
Published: Thursday, 3 January 2008, 2:55PM
British Lightweight Champion Jon Thaxton has urged Amir Khan to make sure the potential fight between the two takes place.

In the aftermath of his 72-second demolition of Graham Earl last month, the Olympic silver medallist threw down the gauntlet to Thaxton who had earlier offered to face Khan for free.

Now Thaxton claims the Bolton fighter is running scared.

"Amir make sure your team shows up for the official purse bid on the 9th of January and let this be sorted in the good old fashion way," he urged.

"I know my promoter will be there ready to make this fight happen, no excuses. So for the sake of British boxing don't bottle it!

"While you were busy shooting off your mouth, my promoter Mick Hennessy formally made your team a great offer of £300,000 for the fight. Your promoter refused the offer, saying "it was not acceptable" then a couple of days later it's announced your fighting in my opinion, a feather fisted Dane, it's obvious to me that someone hasn't got confidence in your chin.

"The British public deserve better, they deserve to see him in a real test and that's me. Kahn has publicly stated the he wants the British title, well I've got it and he has to come through me to get it!

"If you find an excuse to weasel your way out of this fight, I will personally come 'round to wherever you are and hand you the four feathers.

"So after all your bravado, you now need to put up or shut up, start walking the walk and not just talking the talk"

If the fight does happen, I can't see Jon Thaxton winning. TKO win for Amir Khan, in my view.

The Amir-JT saga of the past few weeks

Amir: Thaxtons gone quiet since my demolition of Earl, I think Johns bottling the fight

JT: No Amir I'm still here and more than ready to fight you

Amir: Oh!! Well I'll fight a Scandinavian pigeon puncher then

WTF!

I was amazed to see that Amirs camp had the neck to publically say JT doesn't fancy the fight when Amir is the only one stopping the fight from happening, although I'm confident the fight will happen by or during the summer.

Purse bids should be interesting

Amir hasn't really proved he is above UK level yet IMO

Like Hennessy will put that much money up for a Brit/Commonwealth fight.
Amir hasn't really proved he is above UK level yet IMO
Earl was competitive with Romanov and Katsidis who are Euro and fringe world level and by the typical opposition logic used would make Khan euro level.

The Uk Lightweight level Is too mediocre for Khan to lose at.

Yes but you know as well as the rest of us that means nothing in the long run because styles make fights. The best way to settle the Khan-Thaxton debate IMO is the way the old timers used to do it. Fight each other...in a ring. Everything else is just publicity and waffle before they fight, which they probably won't do anyway now.

I wouldn't say he was that competitive with Katsidis other than that 1 punch, common consensus is that Earl was shot
