Sven Karlson is the guy you are thinking of. He has gone OTT on the fake tan through out the prelims and final. Why didnt the producers have a word and make it tone it down? He looked rediculous. I thought he was auditioning for the black and white minsrels!

Pudzianowski won for a forth time to cement his status as the GOAT - he is a true phenom. At only 5'11" he is way smaller then the vast majority of competitors but his athletism and truly freaky strength puts him on another planet all together.

Terry Hollands came a very credible third and showed massive improvement in terms of fitness and strength on the last couple of years. Glad to see Phister lose - I hate seeing a yank hold the title of WSM.

Zydrunas Savickas is the strongest in terms of a single lift, he wins the Arnold's contest year after year, where pure strength is the most important factor

however he lacks dynamics, speed and coordination and probably will never beat Mariusz in any other contest.

bealieve it or not in weightlifting you have a lot of technique, so I don't think they could brake Olympic records without specially dedicated training.

but in pure strenght they are WAY above anything that a not juicing athlet can deliver. (or anyone juicing in resonable way to pass tests... if you want)

for example the official deadlift world record is 408kg accepted by the international powerlifting federation. i don't know how carfully doeas this federation test for banned substances, but consider the followng link

where Pudzianowski deadlifts 400kg and fails 410 and Pekanov deadlifts 410 with ease! This is only an exhibition, not a major event, so they were not prepared for beating their own records.

Reportedly Pekanov deadlifts around 440kg in training and Zydrunas Savickas around 490kg!!

How much do these guys get paid / make?

THey are simply amazing and must train so hard. I find the events riveting and often wonder why it's not more high profile.

THese guys are amazing athletes and have to be flexible to accomodate the range of events.

DO they make a lot of money from endorsemenst?

I dont think it is huge money in terms of the prize money but they tend to make their money off appearance fees, sponsorships and endorsements the rest of the year around.

I remember years ago the events were sponsored by Tonka Toys weren't they!?! Now Met-Rx have the event sponsorship.

It wouldnt be Christmas without WSM - I have been watching it since I was a nipper!

A few of these strongmen have come from other sports.

Raimonds Bermanis who regularly gets top 3 finishes in the Arnold and WSM was an olympic weightlifter, may even have medalled in some olympic or world championship competition.

Vasyl Virastyuk who I mentioned earlier, who has beaten Pud at the WSM, is a decent shot putter, Throwing 20m.

I can see Terry winning the competition within 2-3 years, he's a naturally strong bear of a man. That's the thing that surprises me about Mariusz, he doesn't look 'natural' but rather looks like a bodybuilder, but is actually a tremendous athelete.

Yeah I agree, Terrys very quick on his feet for a BIG man, he must have been a daunting opponent on the rugby field. Mariusz is a phenomenon (sp) put I can see why you put the word natural in '''s

For all those that missed the final, its repeated tonight on Five Life channel.
Final is on at 8pm. Worth watching just to see the apparent ease in which Pudzanowski does the events.

As has been said he doesn't look like he'd do well as he seems more of a body builder, but he's got amazing athleticism as well

His performance on the ‘Fingal’s Fingers’ is just astonishing and you can tell it was from the way he celebrated afterwards.

His success is clearly down to unswerving dedication and just masses of hard work. For a man who stands less than 6 foot tall to turn those columns over as he did it just phenomenal.

That, and his performance in the final opener - the lift and carry event – were just mind boggling performances. Whilst others failed to load the platform with all the barrels Mariusz just tossed them on as though they were bags of shopping!

He is the GOAT for my money. No question about it. Would like to see him hit a 5th title next year to put him out in front of Jon Paul and Magnus in a class all of his own.

Yes he did used to box.

There is youtube footage of him shadow (kick) boxing and he looks OK for such a huge, musclebound fellar. He says he liked boxing but didnt like getting hit.

I seriously doubt he is natural. Remember he was DQ'd about 3 years ago for failing the test? The year he came second to Vaschuk. He must have cycled off too late. He is still a freak though.
