It's a damned shame, the guy pulls of one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight history, get's his moment in the sun, and ends up vacating the title because he cannot get the fights he wants.

Did Universum have some option or other on his contract, I remember there being some problem with him having to face Universum fighter or something?

Both his hands are currently in plaster after he fell through a plate-glass window at his home. He required a three-hour operation.
He also split with promoter Rodney Berman recently, and is now being handled by Vernon Smith, who has been in the German courts trying to break a FOUR-fight deal Sanders has with Universum. Sanders refused to accept offers from Universum, which he described as "a slap in the face."

Christ the more I find out about it, the more you come to understand just how options kill the sport...or keep fighters careers in check because they won't take bum deals.

I guess at the time it seemed a good deal, because Sanders wasn't going anywhere.

I think Universum tried to force him to defend in Germany against the undeserving Brewster.
Corrie wanted a big bucks showdown with Tua instead ( who I think was WBO No #1 at the time too ). I think HBO said don't worry about the title, just fight Tua and we'll pay you well.

Universum and Sauerland really are a shower of shit.

What the hell had lamon Brewster done to earn a shot. It guarantees that Sanders earns shit all, and if he lost he wouldn't have even had a decent payday.

Of course, you could argue that Sanders never deserved a shot in the 1st place.

I think Sanders was daft to ditch the belt though, now Wlad will soon be back in possession again.

Brewster is with THE DON, that's how he earned a shot. Yes Corrie should've tried to hang onto the belt I guess, a 2nd match with Wlad would've had the same result I think. Wlad still looked a bit shellshocked in his last fight.
That said, Corrie's chin has never been great either, but you're virtualy guaranteed excitement when he's in the ring.
Even if he'd held onto his title it sounds like we'd have had one of those bollocks interim title fights on the cards anyway.
