JC Chavez DVD gets UK release

New DVD doc about the Mex legend out in UK on 21st Jan. Messed up with their release date though didn't they, just missing the Xmas rush.

Strange as I can't see a US release for this, but maybe like Tyson, he's got a massive fan base in the UK? Be interesting to see some reviews on this one.

Documentary profiling the life and career one of the greatest boxers in the history of the sport, Julio Cesar Chavez. Winner of six world titles, Mexican-born Chavez became a national hero, instilling fear and commanding respect from those who faced him in the ring. Interviews with boxing great Mike Tyson, Don King, and Oscar De La Hoya give the film some much-needed clout, while behind the scenes footage and boxing action add up to a full and satisfying portrait of a sporting legend. Actor Diego Luna (Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN, CRIMINAL) makes an impassioned directorial debut with a subject that is evidently close to his heart.

The Lion of Culican was my first idol in boxing - I loved his cool presure fighting style and sublime hooking off the jab. Watching him brake down Rosario at lightweight was spell binding.

He sullied his rep a little with his petulence when the wins started to stutter, but that was just a by product of his champion's/winner's mindset.

I look forward to seeing this DVD - gotta say I cant imagine JC Superstar has more then a cult following in this coutry. Whilst ITV carried some of his fights they were invariably shown in the wee small hours.

Dreadful front cover to the dvd by the way - why not a photo of Chavez in his pomp?..

Yeah they're not going to tempt anyone with that cover art, unless they're expecting Sin City 2.

It's his director debut it says, think he was an actor in those two films. Still can't go too wrong with a doc when JC is your subject, as long as you get the access and interviews - maybe some fight footage as well.

A nickname that gave Graham Houston one of his most memorable BM preview titles for JC v Oscar - "A Lion In Winter"

I remember when Chavez won the vacant title for his first JrLight title, against Martinez(??), in what was seen as a 50/50 fight between two unknown Mexicans. I recall Houston, and most writers, were still not sure if JC was that good even after that. I think the word "boring" was used a few times too. As in he didn't really have a big Mexican fan base at the time.

It was only when he started to put together a winning run of defences, blasting out the Mexican assassin Roger Mayweather, that his rep started to build. Then went sky high with the Rosario massacre and the truly amazing Taylor win, back from the brink.
