Hi: Re: Jack Dorman, lightweight, sometimes featherweight #126471
I made a posting last Fall after seeing your site. "Iron Man" Jack Dorman was my grandfather. As I said in the Fall, he never fought under the name of Jack O'Brien. I double checked with my siblings and cousins, and we all agree, he only fought under his own name.....Jack Dorman. His legal name was John J. Dorman of Bronx, NY. He began fighting in the late 1890's, and continued for many, many years.
We believe he chose the nickname of "Iron Man" not just because he had an amazing build and strength for a lightweight guy, but because he had been born in Franklin Furnace, New Jersey, the furnace and place being internationally famous for mineral deposits, and for making iron.
In the Fall of 2007, I requested that the record you have be corrected, but now I see almost all the fights you had are now listed are under Jack O'Brien, and not Jack Dorman at all. Also, he had a lot more fights than what you have listed, and I have newspaper clippings from places such as the New York Times about them. As I said before, I'd be glad to send you a set of what I have to verify things.
Please get back to me. Alice Reville Tomlin, email: [email protected]. After retiring as a boxer he was then a referee in the New York area for many years even into the early 1950's. It would really mean a lot to me to get contacted and to get the records corrected as I am the one actively working on our family genealogy. Thanks so much.
