That's not very helpful. For those who don't know, Ubuntu is an operating system (Like Windows XP/Vista). Ubuntu is a great operating system, but will not help a problem with viruses on a Windows PC.

DG, firstly I'd recommend you to use either Firefox, Flock or Opera for browsing the web, as Internet Explorer has had loads of security issues over the years and you never can be too sure.
Secondly, Spybot Search & Destroy might help solve your spyware issues.

Ad-Aware, CCleaner and Spybot should do the trick.

You can download free versions from various places.

AVG Is probably slowing down your computer.

My sister put AVG on and did It to mine, so I took It off.

It shouldn't do. I've used it on many computers (fast and slow) and never experienced any issues with it. Norton, on the other hand....

I've had AVG for years, and it's slowed mine down and isn't the best virus software by a mile.

I'd recommend McAfee, although it can be a pain in the arse for P2P. Hackers tend to build Trojans to get around AVG and Norton.

Depends on the trojan. They tend to either restrict your bandwidth across many IPs, or just record keystrokes for websites to get money or fck with you.

I had one that managed to change my flatmate's facebook password, hotmail password and take 400 out of their bank accounts.

If it stopped you using the net, you'd know you had it so would get rid of it straight away.
