I never really heard the full story on this.
Was Douglas contractually obliged to fight Holyfield? Was there no rematch clause in the contract? Or did Tyson just turn down a rematch?
Why wasn't there an immediate Tyson-Douglas rematch??
Apparently, no one who comes to this site knows the answer. That includes me. I do know that as part of the prefight to the Tyson-Ruddock I bout, there is an interview with Jose Suliamon (however his name is spelled), in which he discusses the WBC's decision making process regarding who would fight Douglas next. He gives his excuses and "justifications". It's been a while since I watched that tape, so I don't recall the details.
It is one good reason not to just record ring intros to decision on fights. There is a lot of historical information in the early part of the program coverage on most every broadcast...information that comes in handy years down the line for people with questions like yours. Why most people don't care about anything but the blows being thrown is beyond me, but probably has to do with their limited IQs.

I've heard that there was no rematch clause in the contract. Also, I think Douglas was said yes to an offer to fight Holyfield for 24 million dollars before King managed to come up with a counter-offer.

While your back was turned, the thread gnomes were hard at work as usual. ;)The Keed wrote:Holy f*ck! I had no idea that this was there!!Dave1armedTua wrote:http://www.boxrec.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=14035
It provided enough backstory and circumstantial evidence to satisfy me - perhaps I should learn to be a more demanding customer, what with the high monthly fee I pay to visit this site and all.Still doesn't reall answer my question, though... :(
