Interesting stuff. Off the top of my head, some examples of boxing terminology in common usage:

"Back against the ropes"

"The Real McCoy"

"The gloves are off"

"Boxing clever"

"Backed into a corner"

"Beat him to the punch"

"In their corner"

"Punch one's weight"

"Take it on the chin"

"A low blow"

Gareth Southgate, throughout the 2006 World Cup in his co-commentary position, referred to the first 20 minutes of the games as "Sparring".

Watch out for Alfonso Alves, if they sign him. I watched him score 7 goals in a Dutch league game this season. Think he'll save Gareth's career.

Southgate, on leaving Villa Park to join the footballing giants that are Middlesborough, said it was exciting to be joining a truly huge club. Twat.

I really do hate him. Oh, and his awful penalty saw us fall in the semi-final of Euro 96. He was at Villa at the time so all was forgiven.

Wenger is a keen admirer of Southgate, personally, given the players that have retired or been sold, and the youngsters he's blooding, I think Southgate is making a decent fist of it and will turn out be an astute manager.

He's lost Viduka, Cooper, Yakubu, Ehiogu, Hasslebaink, Zenden to age or money moves if I'm not mistaken....I think he's doing ok.
