Dodson V Froch Purse Bids revisited

Post by knockout »

This from frank warrens website:

"Tony Dodson's British super-middleweight title defence went to purse bids this week, although only two offers were received.

Matchroom put up £23,000, but Froch's promoters, Hennessy Sports, won with a bid of £60,000."

.....Cannot believe Matchroom only bid £23k, they couldnt have really thought they were gonna win with that kind of bid!!!!

That was a little bit disgraceful by matchroom, probably testing the finances of Henessey sports more than seriously thinking about winning the bid.

If Froch and Dodson split 60k I'd say that's pretty reasonable money, given their respective positions.

Dodson should get a little more, being the champion - but I can't see it being a whole lot more. I think both will have a decent earning from this bout.

good money as it is, shit money if matchroom had won!!!!

currently

Dodson gets £36k

I remember someone insisting that they knew for a fact that Hatton was only making 50k a fight.

What utter bollocks.

James, I have heard its more likely to be 250K. Ricky is a millionaire.

I'll never forget a Ringside show many years ago when they showcased Crawford Ashley (still active and dangerous at that time). He was driving around in a Ferrari and had a huge house.

Hennessy wont be stumping up the 60k. The BBC will.

Hatton is getting paid big time. look at the facts:

-15000 gate
-showtime pay for his fights
-sky TV pay for his fights
-he hasnt lost so his purse probably goes up every defence

Yeah, me and a mate estimated it at 250k, with crowds of 15k paying an average of say 30 quid each, that comes to 450k alone, with Warren getting a 1/3rd as manager of that, possibly more like half with other sundries. Then there's the TV money, which Hatton must get a slice of, he may be getting significantly more than 250k.

You'd never think Hatton was loaded though, he's a very down to earth character.

Is that true? I would have thought we'd see him back in the ring if that was the case - He had the luxury items, the segment didn't say if he could have afforded them.

It's pretty easy to buy a flash house and a car (not that I have either), but not be able to afford them.

Did anyone see Frank crowing about the fact in his News of the World column (I only buy the paper to read his column and then get in a bad mood..).

Yes Frank, a promoter agreed to pay an honest pro who is British champion and an outstanding prospect a decent (but not excessive) pay day. They could of course bid 24,000 and still won but is that any reason to crow?

Thats why he's skint.

These boxers have got no idea when it comes to money.

Most of them live way beyond their means.

I cant remember who but a US prospect once got a signing on fee from DK for $400k and spent it all on a Ferrari.

He couldnt even drive.

What a dumb shit.

I do know about poverty, beleive me. I speak from experience.

Its just i was lucky and managed to get a bit of an eduaction and get on the ladder so to speak.

I remember a very touching storey about Sylvester Mittee being interviwed by Harry Carpenter and Harry asked, I suppose know youre a big name, you;ll want the big car the big house etc? Mittee replied, no, just my own bedroom.

He had lived in a tiny falt and shared a room with his siblings.

A very touching story.

Often the Ferrari's and the houses are rented, nothing wrong with that of course, just don't automatically assume the gear is bought and paid for.

There's some Asian blokes a few miles up the road from me who rent out Lamborghinis to the 'rich and famous' and anybody else who wants to look flash.

Sylvester Mittee has been through a really hard time of late. He hangs around boxing shows reading poems, and the likes of Pat Sheehan openly laugh at him. It's sad. You can see in his eyes he's hurting. I hope he comes though the fog.

If you come up as a hustler, with fornicate all education about money, then it just slips through your fingers and dissapears, the blatant consumption of wealth goes with the territory to many fighter, and in fact many sportsmen.

When money is earnt in such large quantities at a time (how many here are earning 50k for 6 weeks work?), it's easy to be gung ho, thinking the good times will roll forever. Then, a couple of losses, suddenly not so marketable, an expensive lifestyle including golddigging bitches, bling jewellery, mortgage, hire purchase fleets of cards, and suddenly, bankrupcy.

then follows the inevitable decline as fighters desperate for money take short-money short notice fights to pay off their debts, and they end their careers as stepping stones with sod all to show for their glory days.

That's why there should be a standard pension, which is paid into by boxer and promoter/manager, admistered by the BBBofC. in fact aren't they trying to start something like that.

Imagine how much money a boxer could squirrel away in their career if they put 5% of each purse into an investment fund, christ, they'd be living the life of luxury.

I'm not a big fan of a pension scheme for boxers, there are only a handful who earn enough to make it worthwhile.

People have to accept that the vast majority of boxers who turn pro will not make anything like enough money to last them a lifetime, not even close.

All a pension scheme would do is open up another avenue for boxers to be fleeced.

I'd be surprised if the average Pro fighter nets £15k in his entire career, 5% of that is £750, not exactly enough to feed and clothe you 'till your 80.

The only way to go is to get small hall boxing booming. People need to get out of their armchairs and get out and watch fights, that way the lads who aren't getting on telly will still earn a regular purse. Many people forget about the kids who are not quite good enough to sign for a big promoter with a TV contract, and have to make do with a couple or three fights a year in a town hall somewhere. If only 150 people are there watching they won't get a lot of money.

Forget about the pension and union shit and get out watching fights.
