ROMAN KARMAZIN: Wtf happened there???!!

Post by overhand_right »

Did anybody else watch this fight with complete disbelief on sat night? Had Karmazin UD written all over it for 9 rds with that class boxing, then that Congolese fella absolutely marmalised him in the 10th!!!

What went wrong for Karmazin? The complete lack of defence has never effected him long amateur or pro career, so was it just the 35 yrs?

This was an astonishing result, Karmazin is pure, pure class amazed we haven't talked about it yet.

Karmazin looked awful from the start. I thought the performance was due to illness or something similar, but according to someone in the "Current Scene" forum, he was really pumped at the weigh-in. I'd like to know if there's any back story as I haven't seen Karmazin look like that before.

I didn't see the fight but just saw the result and was extremely shocked. Bunema was never anything special and expected Karmazin to bust him up for a late stoppage. Maybe Karmazin just got old, fast.

The past 2 fights he's been very light. Around 151 pounds. Before that, when he fought Spinks, he looked like he could barely make light middle any more, like he'd outgrown the division just about. Also, in the past 2 fights he's fought with his left hand way down.

You're right overhand, Karmazin is class. It's bloody tragic. He's obviously wasted away on Don King undercards like so many DK fighters.

He's been managed atrociously, I would hesistate to say he's even been "promoted" since he came to America. There's next to nothing out there for Russian fighters in America even if you hold a world title, which is why Kostya Tszyu was fighting hard to form some organisation to give Eastern Euros better representation stateside.

Karmazin boxed him beautiful for 8 rds, got clipped once or twice in the 9th, then stretched out the blue in the 10th.

Karmazins performance was textbook for 9 rds. The end was sudden and an absolute shocker.

Hell of surprise that one, I was flicking through the recording expecting to see a Karmazin win - he's looked so solid in recent years.

Think it was just down to him getting softened up, then cracked by two Hail Mary piledrivers, one right on top of the other, and there was no coming back from that. Those punches looked like they would have put paid to any LM in the world I reckon. Shows just how good his chin is....or was, that he actually got up from them.

I always thought Karmazin was overrated. Who is the best fighter he beat? Kassim Ouma? Keith Holmes? Also beaten by Spinks and Castillejo in the past. He should have won on Saturday night but I don't know what all the fuss is about.

Used to enjoy watching him fight, still do actually.

Whats Sergio Martinez up to nowdays?

Giollota Moli was a good fight too, very entertaining.

Hello mate, we did talk about it (me and NorthEastBoxingFan from memory), but it was tagged on the end of another thread.
I was amazed as well, but as I mentioned on that other thread I think he showed his inexperience - it was the first time he'd ever been put down and tried to bounce straight back up instead of taking the count on one knee and getting his head together. If he'd done that I think he'd have made it through to the final bell.

He also didnt hold or smother, either-- something that clubfighter used to survive 12 rds with Golota.

well, he's a quality boxer, who fights with precision and has a nice scientific style. some ppl think he actually beat Spinks and Castillejo. He certainly did better v Spinks than Taylor (who ended up gettig the decision), and he dominated Ouma, who made Taylor look bad. And let's not forget, he carved up Obede Toney, who went the distance with super middle IBF champ Bute.

I'd say anyone with a resume like that deserves respect as a quality operator.

But Karmazin's been totally mismanaged & is quite old now.

Correct about Karmazin. I dont like that line of logic Johnsawn and many others use to dismiss fighters. Anybody whos ever tried box should be able to watch Karmazin and see he oozes class-- way he throws punches, selection of, movement etc.

Cant believe he blew this.

The ref messed up badly on the stopage I thought.

It was obvious Karmazin was in big trouble, yet the ref was standing well back as he was driven to the ropes, and as a result he let that last damaging, unneccessary punch land. And near enough take off Karmazin's head.

Karmazin's been one of my favourite fighters for a while now and i was completely shocked when i saw this, it looked like a routine, run of the mill fight to keep busy thats spectacularly backfired. I mentioned on another thread that although he's getting on a bit and a loss could set him back quite a bit, it may not be such a bad thing considering how avoided he was when he was winning regularly. Theres a chance now he could end up as a voluntary defence for someone, especially if he moves up to middle.

On another note, i just bought a programme off ebay of the Karmazin-Walker fight and it arrived today, and its fcking soaked! Useless fcking Royal Mail!

It's completely pissing it down right now.

Would you not think that a rematch would be a good idea?

I know it is but you'd think the posties bags would be waterproof or something!

I suppose a rematch would be the next logical fight for both men cos Bunema isnt gonna get any bigger fights than Karmazin, and if roman wants to carry on im sure he'll wanna put this behind him and show it was a fluke. I havent seen any comments from RK yet about the fight. Has anyone heard anything? Excuses, future plans etc?

Id like a rematch. totally shocked. Karmazin was one of my fav's. He beat spinks but got robbed due to house fighter decision. maybe stamina let him down. Full credit to that other bloke, he is tough.

Think Jermain Taylor beat Bunema. That's 1 that's looking better now on the Taylor record.

He did, yes. I remember Bunema looking terrible, like a shot fighter.

Yes, one of a long string of wins over light-middles that Taylor put together on his way up.

Has Taylor ever been able to knock out a middle?

I always thought Karmazin could have beaten Taylor and given Pavlik a hard fight, maybe even a boxing lesson for as long as it lasted. Ah well.

Textbook case of a fighter getting old overnight. Bunema didn't even do anything, Karmazin just wilted on his own and Bunema finished the job. I suspect we may have seen a similar collapse again Garcia if the fight went into the later rounds.
