Boxers Weight Loss

Post by dr_devious »

I recently read that Joe Calzaghe loses 3 stones during training to come in at 12 stone. Is this true? If so, I find it a surprising amount of weight he has to lose.
How much weight do boxers lose in training? How much do light heavys, supper middles, middles, welters etc weigh when they are walking around and not in training?

No way does Calzaghe walk around at 15 stone between fights!

He probably goes a stone over super middle i'd guess. He never looks out of condition between fights even though he does struggle to make 168.

yeah you've never seen a foto of Calzaghe at 15 stone or anywhere near have you........I know I haven't. Spends too much time running up those Welsh mountains for that I think.

No.

I believe he's a fitness freak himself so that's highly unlikely.

There more chance of Gavin Rees being 15st between fights than Calzaghe.

im led to believe that joe walks around at about 14 stone before he starts hi training camps, that leaves him about 1.5 stone to shed healthily then another half stone to 'boil' off before the weigh in in the final week.

I've always wondered about my own likely fighting weight. I'm able to walk around at 10-7 with careful eating, but I'm not far off 6' tall. Would that make me a candidate for light-welter or welter? I'd guess the latter since I'd put on muscle in training.

I wonder that too. I'm about 5'10" and currently around 11½ stone. I think I can comfortably get down to between 10 and 10½ stone with training (and, like you, putting on some muscle).
I'm tempted to give myself a training regime and seeing what happens.

Yep, actually doing it is the only way to know. I *think* I'd be too weak at 10st though. I reckon I'd lose a few pounds of fat which would be regained in muscle, putting me at welter.

When I last weighed 11-7 I thought 11 would be the absolute limit! Shows how deceptive it can be.

I dont dont think thats too far from the truth, just about right I would say - I was 6 foot, 11/7 and had a 32" waist with a 42" chest expanded between 20 and 40 and I was very fit although I looked skinny - Now I am a stone and a half heavier with a 36" waist - I suppose with a bit more exercise I could get off half a stone but putting a bit on is usual as you get older (less active). I count myself lucky I have never had to worry about my weight.

Me too. I'm 5ft 7ins and go about 15 and a half stone.

Many boxers like Hatton and Calzaghe use sauna suits to get the weight down.

I've done some searching and the most common response is that they are crap for long term weight loss and are actually detrimental to losing long term weight. They are, however, great for detoxing.

Calzaghe and Hatton use sweat suits in order to make weight/dehydrate, not to lose weight.

I saw Hatton on HBO 24/7 using the suits around 6- 8 weeks prior to the fight and he seemed to wear them throughout the majority of his training camp. This is clearly to help lose weight over the six-eight week period not just at the last moment to make weight. I'm sure Hatton gets plenty of the correct specialist advice on the suits and diet from his team as to whether these suits are good for losing weight - they all seem to think so.

Many of our boxers and general public members of the gym use the suits and are happy with the results.

To be completely honest Jamie, I can only take what you say with a pinch of salt, as you are clearly connected to the site that sells the sweat suits.

Why was Calzaghe not selected for the Olympics?

The Welsh ABA told him he'd have to make welterweight. Robin Reid won the qualifier at light-middle, I believe Calzaghe pulled out of the qualifiers with a bad hand.

I don't know if I'd use something just because a well known athlete does - Paula Radcliffe wears those platinum necklace things and them magic socks. Robbie Fowler use to wear nasal strips (breath-right) despite no real evidence that they work.

I did that a couple of years ago and I managed to get down to 10 st 12 lbs (I'm normally about 12 to 12 1/2 and I'm 5ft 10). I reckon theoretically I could make Welter, but I'd look as gaunt as Calzaghe at the pre-fight weigh in

Sauna suits are a load of shit, They only remove fluid from the body and the body needs as much fluid as possible, Ricky does it yeah BUT it still isnt right
