Best ever 'tune up'
Best ever 'tune up'
I rewatched Ali Norton I the other day and they kept mentioning that it was a tune up for Ali.
This got me wondering how many fights billed as a 'tune up' turned out to be great fights??? and which of them is the best?

How was Tyson-Douglas a tune up when Tyson was already the champion?
For me, Jack Dempsey did a hell of a job in terms of getting tune ups before his fight with 6'6" 245 pound Jess Willard, as he fought the likes of Fred Fulton (whom he knocked out in 15 seconds) and Carl Morris, both of which were 6'5" and 6'4" respectively. Was 'great' preperation for a man of Willard's size and strength.

Esteban DeJesus was not the type of fighter you would think of as a tune-up opponent but if the definition of a tune-up fight is one in which you fight mostly just to stay sharp for a fight of greater importance like an upcoming title fight, then that's just what DeJesus was for Roberto Duran the first time they met.
In a very good if not great fight to watch, DeJesus outboxed Duran most of the way to win one of better tune-up upsets ever.

one of the best tune up fights ive seen is jerry quarry vs joe alexander although it only went 2 rounds
joe smashes jerry to the canvas in rd one and jerry comes back at the end of round two with his irish bombs
great fight

That is a good one. I watched the second match between those two the other day and it was a good fight as well.Tomato-Can wrote:Esteban DeJesus was not the type of fighter you would think of as a tune-up opponent but if the definition of a tune-up fight is one in which you fight mostly just to stay sharp for a fight of greater importance like an upcoming title fight, then that's just what DeJesus was for Roberto Duran the first time they met.

Yes, it was. The commentary, however, was awful. You would think Duran was Superman, the way Pacheco & company fell in love with him. It was a competitive fight. Duran was the better man, but DeJesus refused to fall without a fight.Marlin wrote:That is a good one. Zahir Raheem vs. Morales. Never thought Morales would go out like that. You can argue that DLH Sturn almost became Oscar's worst nightmare.
Pavlic Miranda to an extent because alot of people knew that Miranda would win somehow and fight Taylor. They were talking about Taylor Miranda for months and Pavlic was just the worst guy to pick to warm up against as he beat them both.
