The worst possible match for big Corrie

Post by bennie »

Corrie Sanders is slated to face Juan Carlos Gomez on April 3 on Showtime. That's as much as I know of the details for now, but one thing I do know is this: stick your money on the Cuban.

I must say, Gomez didn't look too impressive against Fat (Sanil)Sam.

He doesn't look like he can punch at all at heavyweight, however, he did look to have a very good chin. Whether he could take one of Corrie's hoitzers is another matter.

well he didn't do badly with Sam, a lot better than our boy Danny!!

If Gomez who has a reliable chin stands out of Sanders way for the first 3 rounds I see him winning either late or wide on points.

All you have to do is survive the first 4 rounds with Sanders. He always had stamina trouble in his youth, and that sure as hell hasn't improved with age and weight.

That being said; Gomez is a turd, and I hope he gets clobberd.

There's a lot of guys Sanders could do a real number on with his power. So to choose Gomez, who I don't think has ever lost as a pro and is known for slickness and awkwardness, is just plain stupid!

bennie is right here, this isn't a very good selection of opponent.

Sanders is the business and always has been, but, as has been said by 'Dave1armedTua' above he's a four round fighter, primarily due to lazy training habits (and now age aswell).

The Cuban on the other hand is slick and can move all night long, he has the skills to avoid getting tagged clean for however long Corrie remains dangerous and should stroll his way to a points win.

This is nothing like facing a mechanical Ukranian!

Gomez fights out of Germany. This makes me believe Sanders has been unable to break the FOUR options he was tied to by agreeing to fight Wladimir last year, and the Germans are trying desperately to get him licked.
It's Zsolt Erdei-Julio Cesar Gonzalez all over again. These options are so tough.

I thought you were right for a minute, but now I've thought about it, didn't Gomez leave Germany under a bit of a cloud? I'm sure he's fighting out of the US now.

What about this for a conspiracy theory:

Sanders pissed off with the way he's been fucked about by the Germans and the WBO decides to fight against the man the Germans had and have now lost, Gomez. Corrie who has decided he's ready for retirement anyway puts in a tame performance and loses on points to the Cuban and rubs even more salt into the German wounds than if he had won.

I'm not sure exactly how Gomez fell out with his team in Deutschland, but it definately involved sex and somebody in the camp's young relative. So they'd be more than a tad peeved if he was strutting around wearing 'their' belt. :D

To be honest, I'm not sure what the current state of play is with Gomez promotionally. I know he left the Sinan Samil Sam camp under a cloud, so could still be linked to a promoter in Germany.
But, like I say, I really don't know.

I've checked it out mate, it appears that he's now managed by Sugar Ray Leonard. My conspiracy theory above most probably has some truth in it.

Sugar Ray Leonard certainly seems to be a brave manager.

If Sanders could catch Gomez he'd have him in big trouble, but somehow I don't think he will.
Gomez will probably knock him out mid-way, as Corrie's chin has never been great either.
I think he's been stripped of his WBO title hasn't he? All the talk is about Wlad getting a vacant shot in March..

Corrie actually vacated the belt. He was so sick and tired of the bollocks matchups they were offering him, that he chose to give the belt up.

However, I think that was a dumb move on his part, he overestimated his value on the market, and thought he could tempt Tua, Tyson and the like into a matchup, but sadly misjudged it.

He was to match up with Lamon Brewster as champion, which he had a good chance of winning, now he's facing Gomez, who is fresher and hungry, but is hardly a big money name.

If Corrie Loses, that's the end of the line for him, when he could have beaten Brewster, and perhaps got a few decent if not outstanding paydays behind him.

With hindsight, his 4 option contract with Universum was a bad idea, but I guess Corrie didn't figure his chances of winning were that great.

I thought Gomez looked really good against Sam, I'd back him to win a points decision against Sanders, possibly even stop him late on if Sanders tires badly.

Sam was unbeaten after all; had licked Audley (as an amateur) and Danny. On paper, it's a terrific win.

Not just on paper though, I saw the fight and was mightily impressed, gomez was as slick a Heavyweight as I've seen in modern times.

Listen,

Gomez is a far better fighter than Sanders.

Personally, I think Gomez is the one guy James Toney should avoid.

So should Sanders.

I agree, on paper it looked excellent, but then Sam was flattered by the battering he gave Williams, Williams has looked very poor since that fight, and Gomez looked like an arm puncher.

It was a good win for Gomez, but his lack of punchpower will be his undoing in the heavyweights. Unless of course he was just choosing not to plant his feet....haevn't seen that much of him.

He had the right style to beat the leaden-footed Sam. Very good chin too, but the jury's still out.

The reason why Gomez is a bad match for Sanders is because the Cuban is highly unlikely to be caught be surprise when Corrie trys that huge left cross. So that really just leaves glancing blows which will not be enough to see off the former cruiserweight IMO.

I don't like the style of Gomez at heavyweight, in fact I think it's bloody awful but he's going to be very difficult to beat. The main question mark over him was whether he could handle the extra strength of the bigger men and I think he proved that pretty well against Samil Sam. It's not like he ran away all night.

No he didn't, but there are bigger hitters with better power and faster hands than Sam however.

Yes I thought Gomez looked the best of the lot on the night of the young heavyweights, even better than Guinn - who I think I saw on the front cover of RING today, along with Audley and Mesi.

I was very impressed with Gomez when he beat Sam and I think Gomez will comfortably win his fight against Corrie.

Gomez will be on his toes for the first couple of rounds then go onto win comfortably on points or by late KO
