The DeWitt article in BN got my thinking, how many boxers have appeared in films?

Interesting to see the Salita movie "Orthodox Stance" is being shown on BBC 4 in February. I haven't much time for Salita as a fighter but this might make interesting telly to pass an hour or two.

Read a review of it last year, apparently it's pretty good.

Mark Breland - Lords of discipline . Freddie mills was in quite a few . And Henry Cooper was in The Plank. Speaking of which , when is Eric Sykes going to get a knighthood!

Curtis Cokes - Fat City (superb boxing film). Strangely enough, Cokes didn't play a boxer. The main boxers were played by Stacy Keach and Jeff Bridges. I recorded it from TV some years ago. I don't think it's ever come out on DVD.

Mickey Cantwell was in Snatch too.

I'll give someone a tenner if they can name the fight on the tv in the background in "Rounders". I had a suspicion it was Tracy Harris Patterson.

Also the Roy Jones v Bryant Brannon fight was in Devils Advocate.

James Toney as Joe Frazier in Michael Mann's Ali.

Marvin Hagler in the Italian INDIO films.

Jimmy Flint has probably done the most impressive acting of any boxer, in film. He was compelling in the underrated docu FIGHTERS and was in a film I think called REAL MONEY or something.

Stretch was impressive in DEAD MAN'S SHOES.

A French boxer with a flattened nose played the rapist in Gaspar Noe's disturbing IRREVERSIBLE.

Two-ton Tony Galento played a heavy in Elia Kazan's ON THE WATERFRONT, a film that boxing writers spunk up over and ignore for the reactionary anti-union politics (union as gangster) and that Kazan "named names" in the McCarthy witch hunts i.e. dobbed in anyone he though held a Communist party card and helped have them blacklisted during a disgraceful time in US history.

Carlos Palomino played a homicide detective in William Friedkin's serial killer thriller/capital punishment drama RAMPAGE. I think Palomino was also in GERONIMO: AN AMERICAN LEGEND as a Native American.

Carlos Monzon was in a couple of Italian exploitation films during the '70s.

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad was one of LaMotta's opponents in RAGING BULL.

I've seen some fcked up films in my time, but the opening scene with the fire extinguisher in the club still makes me wince.

definitely, by telling the rape-revenge story back-to-front, it takes away the vicarious - and very dodgy - pleasure of seeing someone raped and then revenged. with IRREVERSIBLE's structure, we are attacked by images that come out of their narrative context. it's confrontational stuff that makes us consider the way we watch violence in film. re-watvhng the film reveals a # of cruel ironies, such as the wrong man having his face literally smashed to pieces.

it's on region 1 (US) DVD. you can buy it from amazon.co.uk marketplace from 3rd party sellers that are usually reliable. probably my fave boxing film.
