Tell Sumbu Kalambay and Crawford Ashley that Nunn had NO powerAl Savani wrote:Nunn had NO power, he was all powder puff stuff. Eubank would of walked through him and has said as much in private, conceeding Nunn was the better pure boxer but that his shots would've had no effect and how he knows he'd of got him out of there. He says though Nunn brought nothing to the table, he got bigger pay days against Gary Strech (playboy to the papers) and Michael Watson (beat Benn of course) and points out he signed to fight Nunn for if he beat Benn at the return match, but conceeded after it was a draw that leading contender Henry Wharton or Ray Close would have been easier and James Toney bigger money if he signed with a other TV net.
Calzaghe compares current Hopkins to prime Curry
Barkley wasn't that much cop and was very beatable.
I feel a Calzaghe win over Hopkins holds up pretty well against that, perhaps because Calzaghe is considered better than Benn was at the time if you know what I mean.
Benn hadn't that long ago been spanked by Watson so many thought he could lose again at any given moment, JC on the other hand is coming off career best wins over Lacy and Kessler so his stock is higher than Benn's at that point in time.
I don't think Barkley would win a round off a peak Hopkins to be honest.

The loss to Watson wasn't bad, Benn looked awesome that night, he was just mindless, thats all. The win over Williams was bad, because he very nearly blew it. He'd been doing the charlie, Nunn-style in Miami. It a good job that the original opponent, Michael Olajide, pulled out late and gatekeeper Sanderline was brought in, because otherwise Benn would have lost that night ( to Olajide ) and who knows if his career would have continued! He looked poor that night, undynamic.

The shot that shook Knox.
Nunn for me is the best boxer since maybe Leonard, Hearns and Robinson at welter. The guy was super-slick, and easily the best lb4lb from '88 to '91. He boxed with more effortless grace than Whitaker. Jones was talented, Jones was awesome. But Nunn was better founded, never off-balance, incredibly smooth and flowing. I know his height and stance, hand and foot speed and reach and reflexes all helped a lot, but have you ever seen a slicker fighter in the ring? It's such a shame he shoved his career up his nose after the Kalambay fight.
And what he did to Toney has to rank up there with the best performances of the last 30 years on boxing ability, as in excluding the finish. Better than Jones's performance against a severely weight-starved Toney (excluding the finish, I know).

Yes, the Honeyghan-Curry comparison was much more applicable to the Hatton-Mayweather fight, in which Hatton, like Curry, was the clear underdog. Joe's the clear favourite going into this and a more accurate comparison might be Hamed-Barrera, in which Hamed, also fighting in Vegas for the first time, entered the ring as favourite, but ended up getting schooled by the Mexican legend. So, Joe, take note!WildWaylon wrote:It is a strange comparison Honeygan had no chance against Curry but beat him while Calzaghe is expected to win.Goz wrote:Also comparing it to Don Curry - it's a funny one. Again Calzaghe is far more highly rated in world terms than Honeygan was at that time.
Not really a good comparasion.
Not sure how Curry is better than Hopkins. His star was bright for the time it takes to finish having a pi$$ but thats about it. Hopkins legacy much better than Currys.
In terms of media career defining fight this is about as good as there is for Joe at this moment in time. I'm glad the fight is taking place and expect Joe to win and cement his legacy as the UK best fighter of the decade. He is also better than the 80's crop of Benn, Eubank, Watson and Graham. Graham would probably have given Joe his closest fight with Benn giving him his hardest fight.

For a Cardiff man I find it strange all Joe is to you is the best UK fighter of the decade (10 years) - Im not even Welsh mate but I believe he is the best SM the UK has ever had and an ATG on the world stage and thats before he beats Hopkins - Fvck me the man is a legend and his Father isnt far off being one himself for achieving what he has: Calzaghe,Macca,Rees and Pryce - The Calzaghes are exeptional people and both deserve a friggin Knighthood - Father and son, that would be a first in sport wouldnt it, and thoroughly deserved - If and only if, Hatton fights Witter he should get one too, otherwise just a cold cup of tea from the queen, and be made a founder member of the hall of shame.Colesy wrote:Not sure how Curry is better than Hopkins. There are still question marks hanging over Calzaghe. What have Lacy and Kessler gone to do since? And what did they do before? Siaca and Beyer were the two worst titlists in boxing, and a shot Sheika beat the shit out of Lacy.WildWaylon wrote:For a Cardiff man I find it strange all Joe is to you is the best UK fighter of the decade (10 years) - Im not even Welsh mate but I believe he is the best SM the UK has ever had and an ATG on the world stage and thats before he beats Hopkins - Fvck me the man is a legend and his Father isnt far off being one himself for achieving what he has: Calzaghe,Macca,Rees and Pryce - The Calzaghes are exeptional people and both deserve a friggin Knighthood - Father and son, that would be a first in sport wouldnt it, and thoroughly deserved - If and only if, Hatton fights Witter he should get one too, otherwise just a cold cup of tea from the queen, and be made a founder member of the hall of shame.Colesy wrote:Not sure how Curry is better than Hopkins. The Calzaghe's are somewhat of a disgrace, they were basically sitting on their asses bitching for 10 years, moaning about lack of recognition while fighting once or twice a year at home (mostly against shite opposition)! If Nigel Benn was dead he'd have been turning in his grave.
If you read what I wrote again you will see I state that Joe is the best UK fighter of the decade, I then go on to say he is better than the 80's crop of SM's. Which equates to he is the best SM UK has ever had. I think we are saying the same thing albeit in a different language.WildWaylon wrote:For a Cardiff man I find it strange all Joe is to you is the best UK fighter of the decade (10 years) - Im not even Welsh mate but I believe he is the best SM the UK has ever had and an ATG on the world stage and thats before he beats Hopkins - Fvck me the man is a legend and his Father isnt far off being one himself for achieving what he has: Calzaghe,Macca,Rees and Pryce - The Calzaghes are exeptional people and both deserve a friggin Knighthood - Father and son, that would be a first in sport wouldnt it, and thoroughly deserved - If and only if, Hatton fights Witter he should get one too, otherwise just a cold cup of tea from the queen, and be made a founder member of the hall of shame.Colesy wrote:Not sure how Curry is better than Hopkins. Not at all, Joe wanted this fight years ago when Hopkins was in his prime - Given the chance Joe would have fought him anywhere - He didnt get the chance and Hopkins has remained his ambition ever since - Thankfully Hopkins isnt shot and is still a world class fighter at 43 so it wont be a mismatch - Joe hasnt always got the fights he wanted, and its taken time to prove he is the best by beating the best - No fighter has more courage than Joe, who has been willing to risk everything to prove that point.thepocketrocket wrote:I find it hilarious that Joes is willing to travel NOW, when Hopkins is 43..One would think he was picking his time carefully..........
I didn't now that. I figured Benn's performance that night was down to him fighting a shifty, spoiling American. Indeed, Williams gave James Toney his first blemish, a draw.Al Savani wrote:The loss to Watson wasn't bad, Benn looked awesome that night, he was just mindless, thats all.
