WHEN THE REF WASN'T QUICK ENOUGH

Post by Slapsie Maxie »

Interesting reading the worst stoppages thread, but wondered what people thought were the fights where the ref could have leapt in a bit more quickly

Mercer Vs Morrison is one for sure.
Tyson Vs Holyfield I is a possible ( did Tyson really need to come out for that last round?)
Andries Vs Hearns was an uneccessary hiding no matter how brave DA was

Worst of all, I think was Holmes Vs Marvis Frazier. A total mismatch and Holmes was calling the ref in for the best part of a round while reluctantly pummelling MF. A horrible sight.

Domestically, I think Arthur vs Gomez could easily have been stopped earlier

Any others?

Good post I much prefer to see an early stoppage than see someone taking a horrible beeting while the fight clearly should be stopped.

Paul Ingles last fight, against that South African, I forget his name.

I know this is somewhat "wise after the event" but given the late 11th round knockdown, and his general condition at that point, they really should have considered a stoppage.

Tarver v Harding 2

Tarver himself was furious with the ref for not stopping this earlier.

Danny Williams vs Klitschko was pretty awful, I think some people are too brave for there own good and just take 5 or 6 unessesary punches.

Its a very fine balancing act, isn;t it - between not wanting to step in when a fighter is not really hurt, and letting things go on in the hope that the guy on the end of a pasting might land a lucky punch.

In terms of ones that went on too long, I don't think you need look too much further than Calzaghe-Lacy - which should have been stopped in the seventh when JC had the American looking like Mr Blobby after a night on the vodka!

I think Lacy's corner should have saved him. It was obvious he could not provide a KO punch in the last few rounds.

Harrison v McCullough

The much bigger Harrison bashing around McCullough for the whole 12 rounds, McCullough was miles behind on points and was never going to have the power to turn it all around with one punch. The corner, the referee and McCullough's management should have known better.

A fair point - though the referee shouldn't assume that the corner will always act in the best interests of their man's long term health!

Yeah it was quite painful to watch, Wayne looked tiny in there and Harrison was never going to force a stoppage against his iron chin. His corner/management should have taken better care of him that night.

He does make for painful nights because when he is getting beaten up like this you know he isn't going to get stopped and has zero chance of pulling a knockout out of the bag himself. Unless he is forced to stopped as in Larios 2 it's always going to be a tough 12 rounds.

I agree completely. I just feel that his corner were disgraceful in that they let him take more of a beating than he should have. Often, I don't think a boxer will quit due to pride, so it's up to their corner to save them.
At least with the way it played out, no-one can complain that Lacy would have knocked Calzaghe out later on. I'm happy about that.

I don't think you'd have heard that anyway, even from our one eyed cousins accross the Atlantic. Lacy was gone from mid way onward and looked like a ghost as he walked back to his corner even in the mid rounds!

I think Carl Thompson v Sebastien Rothmann should have been stopped in Rothmann's favour even though Carl eventually won!

Again, it's easy to be wise after the event and it may not have made any difference to what eventually happened but I don't think Watson should have been allowed out for the last against Eubank.

Think the absolute worst I've ever seen was Hamed vs Liendo. It was the week after Benn-McClellan and he was sparked big time by Naz. He was gone but the ref allowed it to continue with the predictable outcome of Naz nearly decapitating him with his next shot. A disgrace.

In fairness, and without wishing to sound cold, the events of Benn-McClellan should have had no bearing on the ref for Hamed-Liendo. Every single fight should be treated on its individual merits, not be influenced by the "climate" outside it.

But having said that, I remember this knockout, although not the ref's performance, and remember the collective holding of breath after Liendo was KO'd.

This is regarded as the worst ever, and I don't disagree.

Tarnished a great trilogy, still makes me feel sick watching it.

Paret died nine days later.

I've never seen that before. That was awful. WTF was the referee thinking? And Griffith?

Paret got under Griffiths skin giving him the nasty homophobic abuse (Griffin was gay) so Emile really let him have it.

The worst stoppage I have ever watched was a strwaweight title fight for the IBF title between Edgar Cardenas and Daniel Reyes. It was on the undercard of EriK Morales and Guty Espadas II. Reyes pretty much pounded Cardenas with punch after punch from round 2 onwards. It was clear to everyone that Cardenas was gone but referee Jack Reiss let it go on. Cardenas head was being bounced all over the place. It was sickening to watch. Edgar had nothing on his punches but still refused to go down. He was stumbling all over the place - Reyes was actually getting knackering from hitting him so much. Finally he went down from another Reyes barrage in round 6. He struggled to his feet on wobbly legs at nine and STILL Jack Reiss let Cardenas continue. Cardenas fell, supported by the ropes, hands up and Reiss let him take another 8-10 clean punches before stepping in. I remember Barry Mcguigan and Jim Watt in the sky analyst box being disgusted and saying that referee should never be allowed to ref a boxing match again. For a good week or so I felt like battering Jack Reiss - he was that bad!
