Fourth time lucky for me.

Post by Matt Ropis »

After searching my past for some achievement Boxrec bowled me over every time, they refused to take the KO out of my last fight and change it to TKO as I never was knocked down or got a count in this fight, the ref just thought I was taking too much punishment, Unbeknown to him Iwas just getting going.
Then I failed in my quest of two main events in two days, somebody else bettered that ,also my 8 fights in 3 months was drabbed by a battery operated boxer from NSW.
But I have won something off you.
Somebody emailed me and told me I shouldn't be complaining as Boxrec
has me and my brother as only set of brothers in their all time ratings that are both rated in the top 20.

Hey Anton can I tell everyone that boxrec rates us the Best

Post by Matt Ropis »

Hey Anton before Hoggy changes that KO to TKO can I say "According to Boxrec I,m half of the highest rated brothers in Australian Boxing History"
But they rate me as a Light Welter when I was a lightweight I fought and beat the two boxers they have rated as 11 and 12 over 15 rounds in Australian Lightweight fights.
Also got an unlucky draw with number 19

Matt,
I have heard that you had 2 great fights with my uncle Bobby Cotterill. What could you tell me about those fights? I have never seen any of his fights but hear that he was a entertaing fighter to watch and that your 2 fights were crackers.

Hey Matt! What about your old mate "Baby Cassius" Austin, who you had several wars with. He was a Commonwealth Junior Welterweight champion, and they have him rated as a Junior Middleweight!

What is going on? Do they only take a boxer's decline into account?

Hi Anthony
Say Hello to Bobby for me.
He was a good hard fighter, when I fought him the first time up at Blacktown going into the last round he had won 5 rounds 5-4 and the other 4 rounds 5-3 he tired badly toward the end of the last round and I nailed him with an uppercut that sent him over the ropes and onto the tables, when he got back in the ring again he was running on empty and another uppercut put over the ropes again and the referee stopped it,there was 2 seconds in the fight to go when it was stopped.
We got a shower of over $500 and the President of Blacktown came down the hotel the next morning and gave me an extra $50 that he told me they found under the ring.
Got the best fight at Blacktown and the biggest shower in the history of fighting there.
Bobbys next fight was against Wally Carr who he beat soundly prior to our rematch in Melbourne.

Wow, great thread. Some names are coming up that take me back to when my interest in boxing began in the early 80's. I could only read about some of these guys at that stage, but oh well

In one of the old Fighter mags I remember reading about a Wally Carr fight where a spectator yelled "hit him Wally" to which he replied during a clinch "I can't, he won't let me" :D :D :D

p.s. how good was Baby Cassius Austin? Anyone? He must have been pretty good to win a C'wealth title when they actually meant something. I also understand he had at least 1 fight with Jeff Malcolm?

Austin was good enough to take Hector Thompson's Commonwealth title of him. Granted, he lost it back to him, but it is still a good effort.

That reminds me of a story from the late 60s where a fighter complained after losing a points decision. He said to his trainer "He never hit me!" to which his trainer replied, "But you didn't fucken hit him either!"
