Ottke could return.
Ottke may return!
Former super middleweight champion Sven Ottke (34-0, 6 KOs), who retired unbeaten in 2004 after 21 successful title defenses, says he's willing to jeopardize his perfect ring record against Dariusz Michalczewski in a big money TV fight on May 24th in Hannover, Germany. "I can do this!" Ottke told BILD. "My former trainer Ulli Wegner will make me fit." It was reported that the Ottke camp had previously rejected the bout. Promoter Andreas Grajewski confirmed that there have been talks with Ottke but said nothing is certain and two or three potential opponents are being considered. If it happens, the bout would take place at cruiserweight. Michaelczewski is looking for a new foe after final terms could not be reached with Graciano Rocchigiani.

The Reid fight was the biggest joke i've ever seen in my life. There should of been a MAJOR investigation, that was the biggest fix ever in boxing imo. I remember watching it at home, it was a discrase.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:Can't think of any boxer I dislike more. Wouldn't pss on him if he was on fire.

The IBF have been proven in a court of law in the states that it is a fradulent organization. Why anyone would sanction an IBF title fight or go to Germany and fight for its title is beyond me - it is just begging to add a 'L' to your record!Razor wrote:The Reid fight was the biggest joke i've ever seen in my life. I wrote a letter of protest to the IBF over that fight. There was some serious impropriety going on. The Ref, Roger Tillerman, was a close personal friend of the IBF official in charge of the fight Bernadetto Montello, having stayed at his Villa bringing his entire family, and was witnessed on one occasion being given a £5000 watch by Montello.Carlos-Wigan wrote:The IBF have been proven in a court of law in the states that it is a fradulent organization. He had also never refereed a world title fight before, and in fact had virtually zero experience as a professional referee, having mainly refereed amateur bouts.
Why was he appointed as referee for a contest where there were two major belts on the line? I think the answer is rather obvious.
If ever there was a fix in boxing, that was it. The worse case of bent officiating I've ever seen.

I'm sorry, Ottke might not have been everyones (or maybe I should say Anyones) cup of tea... but I do think he would have been competitive with Joe. He holds a number of legitimate wins over good foes.Max Molyneux wrote:Chambers2 wrote:If Ottke won could we see him in with JC? better late than never![]()

It wouldn't of even been competitive when Ottke was active, Calzaghe would of destroyed him.
If Salem was competitive then so would Ottke be.
Joe would have been favourite no doubt, and I would tip him - but I think alot of the basis of Joe's more recent respect has come from the Lacy fight - and sorry, Lacy didn't look much cop again vs Manfredo Jnr.
And he had a shocking tash James if my memory serves me right. Hope you had that in your letter too!jamesmcdonnell wrote:I wrote a letter of protest to the IBF over that fight. He wouldn't of been able to hold his own against Joe's overwhelming flurries.stujones wrote:I'm sorry, Ottke might not have been everyones (or maybe I should say Anyones) cup of tea... but I do think he would have been competitive with Joe. I know I point this every time its mentioned but I had £10 on Reid who was I think something like 6-1, I am still pissed off about that.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:And he had a shocking tash James if my memory serves me right. You know I can see that being Joe's last fight, Hopkins + Winner of Taylor Pavlik + Ottke bring on seniours tour.
Thats if Joe could get his flurries going... Ottke was smart, knows how to grab, maul and fiddle. He won't be an open target like Lacy was.Max Molyneux wrote:He wouldn't of been able to hold his own against Joe's overwhelming flurries.stujones wrote:I'm sorry, Ottke might not have been everyones (or maybe I should say Anyones) cup of tea... but I do think he would have been competitive with Joe. Ottke is seriously underated and those who claim robbery for every fight are on drugs or just havent seen most of the action...
Ottke was a good defensive artist and that cant be denied. Remember, he turned pro late so may have been on the slide form the word go...
When he engaged himself in an exciting fight he nearly got beaten(Brewer 1) He came back, adapted his style and repaeated his victory over arguably Joes greatest victim(says a lot really)
He was able to win nearly every round against Mitchell(ignore the corrupt scoring from one official, that was worse that Reid)
He also put Mundine on ice, something even Kessler couldnt do..
Yes, Joe would have PROBABLY beaten him but he was a very good fighter, 10 times the pugilist that Marcus Beyer was

It wasnt a jibe at you James, the Reid fight was disgusting, Ottke was shot and consequently retired soon after!!jamesmcdonnell wrote:Ottke was very good at what he did, no doubt about it. Would not claim robbery for every fight, just the Reid one, which was as obvious a fix as you could ever see. Several respected journalists contacted me after I wrote a piece on that fight, saying that indeed they felt the same way.
Im just sick of slating he gets, Ottke beat Brewer and Mitchell before Calzaghe got to them and just to denegrate his achievements(and big up Joe) we claim robbery!
Ive even read that Butler went over the edge because he got robbed against Ottke and thats also why an opponent(hernandez I think) killed himself!! These comments are posted without a hint of irony!!
Good fighter and if Joe was so confident of beating him he should have gone to Germany!!
and if you say 'why should he go there'..well, he was happy to do it with Veit..methinks even joe knows it would have been competetive at least

I think Calzaghe was rightly concerned about getting a fair result in Germany. With Veit, he knew he could batter him which meant not worrying about judges, but Ottke was as slippery as an eel, and it's easy to see Joe getting shafted if the promoters hired the likes of a Tillerman to ensure victory.
However, Ottke also made it pretty clear he wasn't really interested throughout.

I agree(though im sure Ottke would have taken the fight with home advantage) the point being that Ottke would have been competetive enough for the judges to maybe be generous, he would have troubled Joe..and tbh, a im not sure how Joes flurries would have trouble Ottke that much, as you said he was slippery, this was a close fightjamesmcdonnell wrote:I think Calzaghe was rightly concerned about getting a fair result in Germany.
