Lennox Lewis Question
Lennox Lewis Question
This may be a realy stupid question with me missing something obviouse, however I'll ask it anyway: We all know about Lennox Lewis's two KOs vs McCall and Rahman, however did lewis ever get up off the deck to win a fight?
I couldn't think of a fight where he did so.
I couldn't think of a fight where he did so.
He went staggering backwards early in the Shannon Briggs fight and - maybe - only the ropes prevented a KD. He came back pretty well in that one.THEBUTCH wrote:I would say he did in the Akinwande fight, but I don't believe the referee called it as a knockdown.
Henry clearly seemed to time Lewis with a good shot and Lennox appeared to dip and touch down.

'Lennox don't bend - he just breaks'!
Also in the Grant fight, between the hundreds of times Michael was eating canvas, he wobbled Lewis.chesh wrote:He went staggering backwards early in the Shannon Briggs fight and - maybe - only the ropes prevented a KD. I think somebody mentioned it earlier, but Lennox was definately staggered badly against Briggs. He was hit hard on several occassions and I remember one volley he took had him on queer street, with the ropes definitely coming to his saviour. (On related matter, why do referees so seldom give standing eights to fighters saved by the ropes?)
But anyway, Lennox could do it. Lets not forget, though, that despite what Vander says, Lewis was pretty hard to find at his peak. He had a long jab that could punish when he wanted it too, and all sorts of heavy, accurate punches to discourage those who were too eager to get close.
Lennox only ever lost when he was grossly underprepared. Unfortuately, that attitude would never have crept into Larry Holmes's regimen, and that's what keeps Lewis in the bottom half the greatest 10 heavyweights ever.

Matter of interest - did Tyson or Holyfield either?
Tyson didn't, did Holyfield suffer a knockdown in the Moorer remtatch which he won? I think he might have. Other than that I don't think he got up to win a fight, only to lose bravely.
Thing is with Lewis, he got flattened by two home run shots, other than that he dealt fairly well with any crisis that came his way.

And people have to remember these are HW, not flyweights!Goz wrote:Matter of interest - did Tyson or Holyfield either?

The nearest of Holyfield got to getting off the floor to win was Bowe 3.

Sometimes i think you haven't watched these fights since the night they occured.
Akinwande was a light shot with the bottom of the glove, Lewis was just off balance. It was a flash KD at best. Rewatch the tape.
Briggs, if you watch, he hits him with a left hook but Lewis trips over Briggs feet which actually sends him falling backwards into the ropes. Rewatch the tape.

Hmm, I'll have to check the DVD again tonight but sure Briggs wobbles him. I distinctly remember Ian Darke commenting on it.overhand_right wrote:Sometimes i think you haven't watched these fights since the night they occured.

As our excitable friend Overhand has mentioned, Holyfield was decked by Smokin' Bert Cooper. Got up to stop him.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:And people have to remember these are HW, not flyweights!Goz wrote:Matter of interest - did Tyson or Holyfield either?

As for Lewis, the Briggs one is difficult; physically he doesn't look too bad, hasn't lost co-ordination in his legs, but he had this sickly "Fvcking hell, that wasn't a tap" expression on his face & I think it was just weird to see such a big strong lad flap a bit when tagged. Much the same reaction Tucker & Holyfield produced when they caught him flush, maybe a little tremor/stiffness in the legs but a definite "Oh shit" look on his face which -- combined with his undignified scramble for the ropes in both cases -- made it look (even) worse than it was.
