Error - Archie Moore

Post by Jens S »

The birth date of Archie moore is wrong. Here is an article from The Ring july 1999 page 9:

The debate rages no more. The ongoing question of whether former light heavyweight king Archie Moore was born on December 13, 1913, in Benoit, Mississippi, as his mother said, or on December 13, 1916, in Collinsville, Illinois, as he claimed, has been answered by longtime boxing fan John Buchanan of Lumberton, Texas. In a letter Buchanan sent to former RING managing editor Phill Marder, now a record-keeper with Fight Fax Inc., he explained how he discovered that "The Old Mongoose," who died last December, was right about his age all along.
"I figured the best way to ascertain his correct birth date was to find him in the 1920 Federal census," Buchanan wrote. "I searched for him in both the Mississippi and Illinois censuses for 1920 without success. Finally, in a biography of Archie I learned that he and his sister, Rachel, were raised by their Uncle peve and Aunt Willie Pearl in St. Louis. Sure enough, there he was: 'Archie L. Wright,' in the household of Cleveland and Willie Moore (probably where he got his fighting, name)."
The census lists Moore's age as 3 2/12 years as of January 1920, making the 1916 date accurate. This means Moore was 19 when he turned pro, 36 when he captured the light heavy title from Joey Maxim., 38 when he challenged Rocky Marciano for the heavyweight belt, 44 when he made his last 175-pound title defense, 46 when he retired, and five days short of his 82nd birthday when he died. The census didn’t prove Moore right on all counts, however; it lists his birthplace as Mississippi, not Illinois.
