is Amir Khan a runner ?
Did you see Amir Khan running ?
The kid cant fight on the inside, plus points for Khan are A1 hand speed and top notch stamina, but hes a runner, its all on the tape
Khan seemed to be happy just throwing shots at Gairy St Clair gloves most of the night and then running about the ring, not accurate punching at all from Amir
People have called Floyd a runner(against bigger men)
but Khan was running from a smaller fighter, this is not good, infact,it tells us Khan is no super star in the making, just another hype job

Khan was back peddling all night long,i felt dizzy at times watching khan run around the ring,Khan was runningharrygreb wrote:he used the ring well. the best boxers - in my view - are always on a slow retreat picking away with long jabs.
Khan needs to learn how to fight in the pocket,or at least use angles, everytime Khan tried to stand his ground(which wasnt often) Khan was catching right hands,Khan doesnt have a clue how to fight in the danger zone, not a clue
Khan should look up tapes of Pernell Whitaker and then Khan would see how to avoid not being hit with out the need to run like a startled rabbit
Amir was getting on his bike after throwing quick powder puff combos that were only hitting Gairy St Clair gloves, then running away.
Khan was being chased all around the ring,Khan cant go toe to toe with a smaller fighter

Depends on your definition of the word 'runner', did he back up? Yes, occasionally to avoid shots. Why did he use lateral movement and/or back up? Because thats his defensive style
WAS KHAN THE AGGRESSOR? Yes he came forward, threw the more leather while StClair covered up and didn't open up.
I've never heard any fighter who was the aggressor refered to as a 'runner'
Did he get hit? Not much so was his occasional lateral/backward movement effective? Yes
BTW if your not a fan of his style and dont rate him then why bother watching him? Sounds like a waste of time unless you have no life

WRONG IMO, Khan back peddled all night longPhenomenal-Nutrition wrote:

It was Gairy St Clair going forward being the AGGRESOR,its all on the tape
Did you watch the fight ?,remember when Duke Mckenzie said "Look at St Clair he is like a jack in the box"
St Clair was mocking Khans running, for fleeting times in the fight Amir did try and stand toe to toe and was catching right hands so then Khan ran around the ring in panic,in a herky, jerky sort of way
With Khans infighting ability being so poor,he will need to run if he ever fights Katsidis, sure Khan has fast hands will take rounds but if he trades with Katsidis he will get his whippet head torn from its shoulders

I think the point being made and a good one at that is don't matter if you call it running or clever avasive boxing Khan has no confidence to trade with featherweights he aslo lacks the ability to do it
Lets have it right Gary is 5-6 years past his best was here for a good payday and Khan should off walked up and spanked him but no ability to do it and no confidence to do it if he ever fights Kasidas which i doubt he will Kasidas will walk straight through him and put an end to the bullshit

I think it is a very good point being raised.
This is Khan's style so I suspect it wont be getting much better than what it is now - He does lack ability to fight on the inside, and to hear the screams from his corner, and from Warren himself every time Khan did drop that left hand was there for all to hear. I suspect he doesn't train for any kind of in fighting.
I've seen some people saying Khans movement was superlative - Now that is going a bit over the top.
St.Clair offered very little but a plodding target, and even then Khan couldn't open him up with 60-70 percent of punches thrown getting sucked up by St.Clairs gloves. In fact he didn't trouble St.Clair one bit.

To be fair St Clair was hardly opening up was he? He was plodding forward keeping a high guard trying to get close to Khan and couldn't manage it. I thought Khan used the ring excellently and very rarely had his back to the ropes. I felt he could have gone to the body of St Clair a bit more but it wasn't easy fighting a smaller man with a crouched style. Outside of that I felt his jabs and hooks were excellent.
They are obviously still a little worried about Amir's chin so why start trading punches on a regular basis with a fighter with a chin as good as St Clair's?
He won every round, got a decent 12 under his belt, showed he can work at a good rate thoughout a fight. I felt it was perfect for him at this stage in his development. I'm sure he will fight a Romanov, Thaxton or Katsides this year and i'm sure if he wins those fights there will be people slating him for the way he does it

It was exercise to take him 12. Little else.
Talk of Corrales and Harris is misleading, we groaned when Scott Harrison was due to fight St/Clair at 126lbs.
It reminded me a little of Maccarinelli v Abdoul.
The objective was 12 rounds for both fighters.
Two words need shouting at Khan. Jon Thaxton.
It's right, its proper and it would the perfect prep for any challenge to Katsisdas (sp). Big strong, hard hitting fella, their respective styles are different but a similarly tough, big opponent.
I dont think he'll be fighting Katsidas any time soon, really, do you?

Thaxton would get smashed. I don't know why people are entertaining this match up.
Khan has shown he is well above domestic level. Is he world class?
Fringe- yes. Genuine- no.

i thought he did pretty well..
Im pretty sure his cornermen told him to stay Mobile. Since St. Claire was pbviously looking for the one HayMaker... It would be silly for him to stay still looking for combos.
As for "Thaxton".
Its been said a 100 times over..
Amir Khan wants to be the youngest Champ before July (?).
He will probably fight Thaxton soon after that, but not now, it would be a waste of time

Khan fights on the back foot but Khan was the fighter looking to open up and exchange NOT StClairclassboxer wrote:WRONG IMO, Khan back peddled all night longPhenomenal-Nutrition wrote:

As for Katsidis he will be VERY easy to hit compared to StClair and Khan probably hits as hard as Katsidis and is the better boxer. Khans punches would get to Katsidis first. Katsidis isnt very skilled
Is Khan a great in fighter? Maybe thats not 1 of his strengths but many top fighters are poor on the inside - Monzon, Delahoya etc
He kept a safe distance, picked his shots and didn't make the same mistakes as he has done in the past, when he's gone charging in with his chin out.classboxer wrote:Yeah and St CLair was 5`4mrkh wrote:yeah, because stretch was about 6'5.
Khan was back peddling from a midget
What did you want him to do? Stand and trade all night and lose all his natural advantages over a smaller opponent?
Standing toe to toe, would have been great advice from his corner......I don't think!!!!!
The lad can't win, whatever he does. He 21, he learning his trade, this was a good 12 rounds for him and he fought the right fight. If you can't see that, then you're being totally unrealistic.
People are calling Khan a chinny backpeddler now but remember, they used to say the same things about Ali when he was called Cassius Clay.
So what if it turns out that he's not the next Sugar Ray Leonard? Khan's seldom in a dull match and he's also one of the main reasons that boxing has enjoyed such a boom on ITV in recent years.
Enjoy it whilst it's here.

Khan needs to learn how to step to the side, instead of using the whole ring to circle
maybe i was unfair to say Khan should watch tapes of Pernell Whitaker to learn
After all, sweet Pea had the skills and foot work no other fighter has been quite able to duplicate but Khan can learn from watching Calzaghe.
Khan has none of the skills of Joe Calzaghe,ok, Calzaghe had a lot to learn 15 fights in but one thing is for certian, Joe was never a runner against a smaller fighter, like Khan was in this fight,Amir was fighting scared and looked fragile and clueless in the danger zone
Khan was darting in and out but only hitting St Clairs gloves, then it was back to running,Amir needs to learn how to lean back/side step in the pocket and throw sharp counters instead of running like a ferret

Khan lacks the ability(maybe its confidence) to fight in the pocket,Khan just darts in and out,can you imagine his running if he fights Katsidis ?
what a fiasco that will be
