Jennings v Minter

Post by telboy66 »

This fight had it all skill from Jennings heart from Minter, fought at a teriffic pace both taking great shots both of these two boxers are true sportsmen,This must be in the reckoning for domestic fight of the year.To see the "respect" they had for each other after knocking seven shades out of one & other is what our sport should be all about.Jennings can move on to european & even world level while Minter can come again there won't be many this side of the world who will fancy getting in the ring with him

Yeah was a good bout to watch, saw the good and bad of Jennings, as he seemed in control early on, but seemed to switch off a bit after 5 rounds. But came back well.

Minter seems a bit musclebound to me, think that slows him down a bit. He needs to work on distance, as he threw alot of punches out of range, but that would also be down to Jennings good movement.
Minter can come back and a british title might not be out of his grasp, he needs to get more fights though, and build up again.

Jennings should take a chance now, he's finding himself above the level of WBU, he could carry on making defenses of that title as long as he wants. But i think he wants a challenge. The only problem for Jennings is the Welters are one of the strongest divisions at the mo. Jackson Osei Bonsu holds the euro title, and is a big puncher. Kermit Cintron, Miguell Cotto and Mayweather Jnr all hold the world titles, so they would all start a big favourite over Michael.

But Yuriy Nuzhnenko holds the WBA 'interim' title, i don't rate him very highly, and Michael would start favourite there. Maybe he can go for that one, then step up again.

With all the respect due to Minter, he seems a lovely fellow and has a big heart but is a level below the best in Britain. The fact he is getting such lauded opportunities may have as much to do with his old man and large ticket selling following as his no nonsense, come forward style.

Nice to see Jennings get a run-out as he has been left on the back burner for too long now. That Pryce win gains in value all the time and maybe they can get him a big fight soon and drop the fake title, he deserves better.

Really enjoyed this fight, been waiting on it for a few years now as it always seems to get cancelled.

Jennings is class and I'd like to see him step up. As you say Minter has alot of heart and I would love to see him fight more reguarly but more importantly against better opposition (Jennings definately was a step up but too soon from his lay offs) as I think he could improve but to what end I do not know.

Jennings is a tidy boxer, but at 30 years old, you have to wonder if his limit has been reached..

He fought well on Saturday, and could continue making a decent living fighting at the level he is at. I suspect anything higher will result in tears.

Jennings is one of our best fighters, he lacks the x-factor to become a genuine world champion, e.g. not quite the power in his shots or world-class speed or massive strength at the weight but he is well schooled in all areas.

Fires very crisp combinations, has good variety, stout chin and good movement. In his in fight brain is pretty good, sticking to tactics, he just seemed to switch off for 6-7 Saturday.

However, to suggest the WBU is his limit is a little unfair. I'd make him a live threat at European level and with Colin Lynes proving good basics can get you a long way and Gavin Rees showing the right tactics and the right opponent can deliver all sorts of possibilities.

I think Jennings is capable of a little more.

Minter looked rusty and too top heavy to me. I don't think I can confidently suggest he'll ever win that British title or anything like it.

Minter v Hatton Jnr would be an interesting little clash though. I think Hatton would box him to points, but Minter will be better for the rounds last night.

Ah...the joy of hypothetical.

I think some are being a little harsh on Minter. His only two real losses have been against fringe world-ranked guys and he was very competitive in both. He remains a decent prospect for british honours, at least.

I still think that Minter can achieve a British title, the holder is Kevin McIntyre who's on a decent run. But Minter would stand a good chance there. McIntyre has been stopped 4 times before, so could be caught again.

There are some good matchups at British level for Ross, Commonwealth champ Craig Watson is another boxer on a good run, i'd start him favourite over Minter.

Depends on your definition I suppose - don't think either a fringe World title guys.

Jennings is a good boxer, and seems to be a lovely bloke - but I wouldn't like to see him with the likes of Cotto, Mosley, Judah, Margarito, Williams etc.

I think Alfonso Gomez would beat him comfortably enough also.

Great fight. Thought Minter was too top heavy/muscular. Jennings showed flashes of real class but I thought I saw a few chinks in the armour as well.

Terrific fight wasnt it.

Minter has great heart, his inactivity cost him dear, thogh Jennings is underrated.

I'd make Jennings a big underdog against any of the champs, but that doesn't mean he isn't fringe world class. It's an extremely competitive division, and the fact of him being unlikely to WIN a world title shouldn't disqualify him from being RANKED for one.

I agree- I think Minter is a gutsy fighter- remember, he isn't actually much more experienced than (for example) Amir Khan, but he has been given 2 really challenging fights- in both cases putting up a good perfromance.
